Refused entry into Singapore

Recommended Posts

Not uncommon for IO's around he world to question a Thai citizens intentions... Whether it's morally right or wrong is open to discussion.

My wife has had a couple of 'queries' over the years we've travelled together, upon entering HK this year from Macau she got a grilling from the HK IO, I pissed myself laughing as did we all - yes the female IO had a chuckle when I came back to figure out what was the hold up and was asked if my wife was my wife, I reluctantly acknowledged that my wife was telling the truth, I said to the IO that it was the matching wedding bands that gave it away wink.png

The IO turned the tables and said it was the fact that my wife's handbag wasn't a fake that gave it away tongue.png

I've seen the Singaporean IO's get right stuck into SEA females, pulling them out of line and sending them to another counter to the right of the main desks. They've got a right to be suspicious though, it's their job. They're quite the sticklers when it comes to enforcing their own interpretations.

But all one needs to do is take a captain cook at Craigslist to realise the IO's are well within their discretionary allowance to behave as such...

hey i've been in that singapore sin bin more than twice and i am Caucasian male of not few years but decadent lifestyle. after questioning they let me through and say i can come and go as i please. fellow sin bin occupants were not treated as graciously.. however after each of these sin bin occasions i dont go there for a few years because it pisses me off to be treated like that. these iO are a real asset to their country. cost their country millions no doubt. not as bad as the grilling on the lao/china border where after just one grilling issue there i refuse to return to that country (china) at all. wasnt only me but innocents others (unknown Caucasian foreigners crossing at the same time as me) as well. bad news, dont go there.

So what are you trying to say exactly?

Singaporean Immigration not discriminating against who it lets in and who it doesn't?

Would appear they're doing their job, no?

Anyone can be a prostitute, not just thai women. I have to disagree with the singapore IO.

True, but the chances of a single Thai woman going to Singapore for prostitution are considerably higher than just 'anyone' Singapore immigration are right to be suspicious.

Yes rightly or wrongly immigration officer across the world form opinions from experience and this often mean some sort of profiling by

age and country of the visa applicant.

I have to say I get bored after a couple of days in Singapore and the prospect of a longer stay would not be high on my travel plans.

Then the same scrutiny should also apply to single european females since singapore alsi haa european prostitutes.

Why? European females are not known for prostitution, but it's the first thing most abroad associate with Thailand

I'd suggest that at any one moment there are hundreds of illegal prostitutes in SG from Thailand versus a handful of Europeans. Single young bangable European ladies of prostitutable age in SG are about as common as North America female sex workers in SG. If they are there at all, it is probably for a non working holiday or travelling with a client.

OTOH it is well known that illegal SG prostitutes are generally from the following countries: Siam, Indonesia, China, Vietnam & PI. A French or German prostitute would have little reason to come to SG for work.

SG Immigration is not looking for any female from LOS, such as 60 year old grandmas.

True. But my positive impression of thai women remains unchanged. I do not condemn all thai women or thailand in general.

I've done visa runs to Singapore a couple of times - for the stamp - spend 2 hours in the airport then back again, works out cheaper than a proper visa in most cases with air miles or Tiger Airways. FIrst time I was asked why such a short visit, I told them to get a visa stamp, on you go. Second time, no question. Third time, no question. Not in Thailand either.

My nationality in combination with my dress and my manners make it easy for the immigraion official to make that quick snap judgement which they must hone to carry out their job. You are severely underestimating these guys if you think they are just randomly singling out Thais. These people get a sixth sense, which of course isn't perfect as OP is proof off.

Actually, I've never, not once anywhere had immigration or customs trouble - except for the one time I imported a couple of hundred viagra into my home country - then I was quickly and efficiently taken aside. My point is, immigration and customs officers are not bumbling idiots, they are usually quite adept at figuring out who is 'suspicious'.

Singapore seems to have a better safe than sorry approach to Thais, the same in every country, because lets face it, a majority of Thais travelling abroad are prostitutes, simple fact. I am sorry to hear about the case in the OP, I would much have preferred if it had happened to one of the delusional middle class to upper class Thais for whom the outside world is a vague and certainly inferior place.

Why would China grill you? In China questions are rarely asked and entry is virtually guaranteed, provided your visa (if required; it usually is for most nationalities and purposes of entry) is in order.

Yes, but there are certainly far, far fewer European prostitutes in Singapore than Thai or Filipino, Vietnamese, Lao, Chinese or other Asian ones. Therefore, immigration can't just apply a blanket policy towards questioning all females from all countries on the off chance they might be working as prostitutes. Some discretion is required and immigration know what to look for. If there are certain countries in Europe to be suspicious of when it comes to "working" females, then Russia, the Ukraine and a few other central Asian/eastern European countries would rate up there, but certainly not western Europe.

If the IO did turn away your sister without any explanation, you can go to the ICA website and feedback on the issue. Putting myself in the IO shoes, a single female, young, pleasant looking, foreign, will arouse some curiousty. They will ask where are you staying, how long, proof of return air tickets, cash on hand, prior visits etc. There are many women who sneak through immigration and get caught later so immigration will have to be careful. Best if her Singapore partner accompany her. He will be the sponsor and she can apply 28 days stay at airport instead of only 14 days.
