BANGKOK, 29 October 2013: Rail buffs will be disappointed by the State Railway of Thailand’s decision to extend the closure of the northern line between Sila At station in Uttaradit province to Chaing Mai until 30 November.

The rail line has been plagued by derailments and accidents that the SRT blamed on heavy rain hit the region throughout September, but poor maintenance of the line over decades was also a major factor.

SRT governor, Prapat Chongsanguan, said the northern railway line will reopen 1 December, ahead of the festive season when thousands of Thais travel north to enjoy the cooler weather of Chiang Mai province.
