PATTAYA: -- A 41 year old man is in custody on charges of murder after he repeatedly stabbed his son in the chest and stomach during an early morning drink-fuelled fight.

The incident occurred at the family home in North Pattaya and led to the arrest of Khun Ooapon who appeared to be intoxicated. A blood-stained flick-knife was recovered and taken into evidence.

The victim, Khun Gitichai aged 19, had been taken to the Bangkok Hospital Pattaya but could not be saved by medics. His body was then sent to the morgue at Banglamung Hospital.

According to the suspects other son, Khun Naruson aged 20, he was awoken just before 6am by shouting coming from the ground floor of the house.

He heard his father arguing with his son over allegations the father was hitting his wife. The pair entered into a fight where the father sustained facial injuries. In retaliation the Father used the knife and stabbed his son once in the left chest area and once in his stomach.

RIP Lad. Good on you for sticking up for mum if that was what you were doing.

Will the "It is understandable because he was drunk rule," kick in on this?

You know, part of the problem may be watering down beer and whisky with ice 20:1. Since they appear incapable of holding even the wee smallest amount of alcohol, they would pass out and stay out of trouble if they drank it straight.

Why is family life held at such disregard and low value - no matter what transpires in an argument a sane person would never consider knifing a family member.

Saving face [literally in this case] once the son had injured the fathers face physically and the Thai saving face attitude to go totally berserk enough to kill your own son just doesn't make sense.

[ Khun Ooapon showed little emotion when he was arrested and even joked about the incident with Police as he was taken away from the scene. ]

No remorse at all - did he ever love his children or are they a burden to him as is with many Thais. (?)

Killing his own son, his own flesh & blood....but still joking about it when caught. Such a good father figure...father of the century award for this drunken scum bag.

Very sad indeed. Tragically, alcohol plays are role in a large number of crimes against persons worldwide. Sad story and the pain has just begun for all members of the family. RIP young man.

So it is said:

People do what they can, with what they have, in the circumstances they are in...

Some people have very little to start off with...

Very sad.

The family has lost a son and will likely lose their father as well.

I hope the family can gain some comfort from the fact that the son died whilst trying to protect his mother.

Seems that the "loss" of this father (assuming he goes to prison for a very long time) might prove to be a positive thing for the family.

Perhaps they'd "lost" their father to alcohol prior to this sad incident. I suspect alcoholism is prevalent in Thai society as it is in many others. It seems to still carry the stigma of shame that other countries seem to have shed and Alcolholics Annonymous is relatively underattended by Thais from my experience.

This too shall pass

True, but how will the mother support herself financially without husband and now son contributing.
