Nice...giving advice to dodgy foreigners on how to evade Thai laws...isn't this against forum rules?

I'm starting to get sick of foreign people in Thailand. I had a chance to meet and get known very good some old traditional Thai families, see the VHS tape of Thailand 15 years ago, photos 30 years ago, and look at family books. Actually why Thailand become corrupted and have so much ILLEGAL things, is only because we FOREIGNERS brought our shit and complex to Thailand many years ago.

This is factually incorrect. Read some Thai history. You'll be amazed to learn that, before Rama V, the country was split into spheres of influence. North of Bangkok was run entirely by the Ministry of Interior, like its own fiefdom. The South was run by Defense. The ministers of those two ministries were like viceroys and amassed tremendous wealth. That's one reason why Rama V is so revered. Corruption is deeply ingrained in Thailand and Thai culture. (Same is true of prostitution, FWIW.)

By the way, I was here 35 years ago, and I can tell you not much has changed with regard to bribe-taking. I don't mean this as Thai-bashing. I love these people, and have been on the inside in many ways. But this self-loathing "Farangs are to blame" is nonsense. Thailand, like my own country, has problems, most of their own making. You'd have a better argument if you blame the Chinese, but that's still a stretch.

I can not see how he is giving advice to dodgy foreigners. The advice is to legitimate business people to have their paperwork complete and on hand.

Happened to me in Pattaya few years back. My wife and I had a 9 room guest house we also had 2 shops on the ground floor rented out. It was about 10am and the laundry l day called me to say a Thai man wants to rent a room on long term and wants me to come down, I said Nid my wife was in the shower but I will come down.

I say hello to the guy and he started to ask me a price I said I not know my wife is in the shower but come up, I showed him the room opposite our room he liked it and said again how much I said not know my wife come in a minute and he persisted and said how much I think I said I think around 7,000 month but my wife come, then my wife came in and I went back to our room she spoke to him and she said he yust started work in Pattaya and his wife is school teacher and will bring her around later today.

Within 30 mins a load of immigration guys arrived in 4 vehicles the boss guy got me and said I was working and told me one of their guys came and I told him room was 7,000 month, tried to explain I was not but ready to cart me away, I called my lawyer and told him the story he spoke to the guy ang gave me the phone back I said what will they do he said they will take me to the police station and I would be there till the court opened on Monday I said what will it cost me to get rid of them, he spoke to him again and he said 20,000 I them turned to this bastard and said ok. Went to the Jomtien office couple hours later and gave him the money.

And what's your complaint? You were working under the definition of the Thai civil law codes and rightfully arrested if you indeed didn't have a wp. Just be thankful it was in Thailand, where, as one Thai official once put it, big problems can become small. In many other countries you might have been deported.

Entrapment, cohersion come to mind. Do you have the same zealous opinion against the 100,000s that are abusing the education visa system and in all honesty are here illegally and not paying tax or really contributing to society

Yes I do...just search my posting history to see.

His complaint was he had 20,000 baht extorted from him without any legal process.

He was under threat of being locked up otherwise.

The 'crime' was created by the police......entrapment.

How is justice served by these guys divvying out the money?

Punishment should not be in the hands of the police.

No, he knowingly broke the law and was arrested. He then contacted his lawyer to see if he could avoid having to go through the legal process. He voluntarily paid a 20k baht fine in lieu of going to court.

The law is very clear, showing a potential renter a room and discussing the rental rate IS WORKING. It's what the manager or receptionist at this guesthouse should be doing. The op could have easily said he didn't work there and that the manager (his wife) was momentarily busy but would return shortly. It's really very simple.

Suggest the above get a new lawyer.

His complaint was he had 20,000 baht extorted from him without any legal process.

Wrong, he chose to pay money to make a potential problem go away.

He was under threat of being locked up otherwise.

Under threat of what, fear, thats what these scammers prey on.

The 'crime' was created by the police......entrapment.

I dont doubt it, as mentioned above, get a decent lawyer.

How is justice served by these guys divvying out the money?

No idea.

Punishment should not be in the hands of the police.

Its not, its in the hands of the court.

Before anyone chips in, yes I have been threaten with deportation.

As soon as I mentioned to the person, call a taxi lets go to immigration and take these two witnesses with us, all of a sudden the threat no longer existed.

These scammers prey on fear and ignorance, much like the music scammers.

For others its nothing more than an occupational hazard in doing business in a city full of bottom feeders where many are on the make or on the take.

informative and generally interesting thread, well done.

some points of view here are also "interesting"...

One of the points I can add is, if your office isn't a shop open to the public, keep its doors locked and put a sign up "private - meetings by appointment only".

A lawyer mentioned to me that police needs a warrant to enter private rooms. A few greedy cops won't have a warrant.

No, it is what happened after that we are arguing.

He was threatened with the cells for the weekend until court opened on Monday.

The police got what they were pressing for.

If someone posts on here asking someone to recommend a hotel and the price, and I do, will I be expecting a visit from immigration and threats.

I repeat, the police should not be able to impose and collect fines, that is the job of the courts.

What the guy did hardly deserves remand, and holding his passport or bail would suffice.

As the mod posted, the part about disappearing if ones paperwork was not in order was edited out of the original post.

What I don't understand is why I see so many Indian people manning their hotel registration desks. In Bangkok a few streets over from Nana I saw two. Here in Pattaya I saw two on Soi 11. Can you get a legal work permit to work in a hotel? Maybe they have some sort of business working permit? Oh and how about the Russians handing out leaflets down on Walking street or the dancing russian ladies in the gogos. How in the world can those be valid working permits?

I would wager they aint Indian, they are Thai, especially in the area in Bkk you mention.

As for Pattaya, have a look at all the Indian owned tailor shops there are all over the place, the tailor touts outside them tend to be from places like Nepal.

As for the Russians etc, you know how things work here, no need to ask the question.

...sent it to someone she knows at Jomtien Immigration who confirmed that they are actually legitimate, but have a reputation for being a bit cash-hungry.

I find it a bit credulity-stretching to believe someone at Jomtien Immigrations would be sending out gossipy accusations about people from their office who are apparently going about their duties. Since you are legitimately working here and no one was asked for any bribes, this embellishment to the story is just unsubstantiated rumor mongering.

It may be best to inform your staff that you are "Out of Office" until further notice.

Yes, that wouldn't raise any suspicions. Or they could just say you're on the run from the authorities and remove any doubt.

Lol... Who knew that TV was full of so many puritans. OK, sorry to have stretched your credulity (if that's even proper English...). It seems you have made up your mind that instead of believing my first hand account of what happened you prefer the idea that I conjured up some fiction to embellish the story and spread rumors.... To what end exactly....??? To get some more likes? To make myself look big or something? Hahaha!!! Why not suggest to the mods that any first hand account of events that cannot be verified by another TV member who is officially approved by you be deemed unacceptable content. Say goodbye to any restaurant reviews...

Maybe you should think of it like this - had these guys left my office after refusing to show any ID and that was the end of the story then I'm fairly sure most people reading the post would have surmised that these guys were fake, which is exactly what I would have thought also. The fact is that the story didn't end there. When I went upstairs I asked my staff to call Immigration to explain what had just happened and to see if they were likely genuine Immigration officials or not. As it turned out I didn't need to because she had already sent their pic to her friend who said what he said... Rather than embellishing the story I was validating their credentials and also adding to the facts surrounding the events that took place. I was there. I know what happened and I have the CCTV footage to prove it. You, on the other hand, weren't there. You don't know what happened and you have.... very little, except for an aptitude for being judgemental and kinda nauseating. Nice work - keep it up.
