Hun Sen pushes for peace with Thailand after ruling

BANGKOK, 12 November 2013 (NNT) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that Thailand and his country will cooperate within the bilateral framework after the World Court ruling that urged both parties to thrash out their differences.

Mr Hun Sen said in a televised address that the ruling was an important and historic step forward in the efforts of the Cambodian government to solve the long-standing issue between Cambodia and Thailand peacefully and based on international law.

He also called on the armed forces and citizens alike to avoid creating tension with Thailand.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra earlier stated that Thailand would enter into negotiations with Cambodia to put an end to the issue.

The judgment is expected to calm tensions at the border as villagers have begun to move back into their homes after previously hiding out in shelters.

It must have been a long nightmare for the locals. Here's hoping that it can finally be brought to a sensible (silly me) and peaceful conclusion that is sustainable.

Let's hope they can work something out. It has been a shitty situation for locals on both sides for decades. Now the Cambodians are making money from tourists visiting the temple but the Thais aren't. They used to charge foreigners 10 times as much as Thais to enter the national park. That's karma.

They been "negotiating " for 51 years, sometimes with bullets, rockets and grenades. The children haven't gotten their way so it will continue as before.
