Popular Post Robby nz
Has Thailand done anything to help an ASEAN neighbor in dire need? All I read is self serving stuff about amnesty and the temple, not a peep about sending desperately needed aid. It has C140's there which can get food and fresh water their quickly, it has a navy which can also get ships loaded with aid, even an aircraft carrier that can take helicopters to help with food and water distribution and evacuation of injured. It has military medical teams that are desperately needed and medical facilities on board the ships where people can be treated. I read on world news that people there have not eaten or had fresh water for 5 days. Thailand should have had aid on the way the day after this happened, but no, those in power are to tied up in their own little world, I wonder if they even know about it? No excuse for the opposition either, Abhisit should be attacking the Govt for not getting aid down there and Suthep should be giving them heaps from his stage. Makes me angry to think of all that rice rotting in storage that could right now be helping to save lives in a nearby Asian country. Are the Thai Govt doing anything and if not why the hell not?
Popular Post petedk
I was thinking the same. I saw on BBC World News this morning all the people suffering with no food or water. Thailand has tonnes of rice. Why not send some to help these poor people. US 18mil, ships, planes, helicopters, medical supplies and food. Aus has sent medical teams, planes and some ships on the way.

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand In the Wall Street Journal it gives the figure for Chinese Relief as 100,000 USD. Maybe the amount is so mean because they're waiting for the Americans to pay back their loans? Just kidding. The Chinese response is really shameful. They are soon to be biggest economy in the world and this is the kind of global concern we can expect from them. It does perhaps reflect political tension between China and the Philippines in the region. Edited November 13, 2013 by Jingthing

Robby nz
http://www.thaivisa....-2#entry7033356 A pittance if that item is correct. Interesting to see what the Govt does send, not what it collects from others. Wonder how long it will take before anything is actually done what with the TV show then collecting donations and other dithering. Food would seem to be one of the things most desperately needed by those who have survived. Several plane loads of that rice 3 - 4 days ago would have gone a long way to helping.
johnnytvchen
The Thai government should give or sell the over stock rice to the Phillipines. Better then stored in a warehouse waiting to get rotten.

bunta71
My wifes' family are/were in the most directly hit towns Guiuan and Gen. MacArthur Eastern Samar. The photos and news clips most people see are in Tacloban which is actually a little bit "protected compared to Guiuan and Mac Arthur. Now, several days into this disaster we have heard nothing of survival of any family members. Those two towns do not really exist anymore. The US Navy carrier and another ship arrive tomorrow and things will happen. At the moment, 90% of the aid that has been sent is not being allowed into Tacloban airport as it is being used exclusively by the Philippine Air Force and their two C-130's. Complete chaos is the order of the day...New Peoples Army (communist) have attacked food convoys, people are hungry and will do anything. My wife and I will fly over early next week to sort out what we can with her family...if any survived. Word is that the Mac Arthur mayor had the high school as a shelter. It sits less than 50 meters from the open east facing sea and rumors have it that it collapsed completely as did many other "safe" shelters. Almost a week and no one has made it to Mac Arthur...

Andyfez
Yes, apparently the Democrats criticized the government saying that if the government started sending rice there could be more money going into the pockets of the corrupt (Thais not Philippines). The big 'C' word has raised it's ugly head as usual and principals go ahead of practicalities with the Democrats as usual.......

Popular Post Costas2008
I am amazed with you TV members living in Thailand for many years. You should know by now that Thai people hide behind this pretence smile and never think and be concerned about anything else except their own selves and their immediate families. Donations is only for the local Wat and that is because they believe that by offering the 100-200 baht all their sins and wrongdoings will be forgotten. Only in the case they are going to loose face to the international scene may be and I repeat may be they will do something to show themselves up. So let's wait and see what will happen!
Popular Post sirchai
Chinese people make the big money in Thailand, Laos, the Philippines, but also in other South East Asian countries. I find it hard to believe that none of the ASEAN member countries does what their goal is. Especially when help is needed. Thailand could send a lot of rice, drinking water and drop it off straight from an aircraft. Strange is that both countries are so corrupt, that nobody really knows where any donations of people are going to. I'd imagine that doctors, nurses and a lot of medicine is urgently needed. Just thinking of a part of the ASEAN Anthem;;;ASEAN, we're bonded as one, looking out to the world. For peace our goal from the very start and prosperity to last.We dare to dream, we CARE TO SHARE>>> Best source seems to be:: http://www.bbc.com/ I hope that not many people have to suffer and help will reach all victims asap.- Edited November 13, 2013 by sirchai

Popular Post FangFerang
This is the longest post I have ever made here. If you have the time to read it, you will understand why I was am suddenly so wordy. Tonight there is a fundraiser on Thai TV at 8:30. I commented on it at the Bangkok Post, but the moderators never posted it. You can also donate directly to the manila chapter of the red cross, which I recommend (all things considered). I sent 6000 baht yesterday. It is cheap to be a hero today. For 1000 baht, the cost of a couple bottles of Pipers, a family of four will have rice and medicine in 2-3 days, instead of the 1-2 weeks it will take for the Western cavalry to arrive and take action. If you read the article above, that means those without food for the last five days will die before the Big Guys can arrive. This is not prediction, it is fact. Human beings cannot live without food for 19 days. There is, therefore; the real prospect of cannibalism. It is cheap to be a hero today. If I asked you in person, and showed how there was no scam involved, I know half of you would do it. The help incoming is many days away, a funeral away for these people, and limited. The Red Cross is coordinating, meaning they are also going where the Cavalry ships and planes are not going. Amazingly, the logistics are well-coordinated. Probably good old UK and US process flow theory in action altogether. The area of destruction rivals 40% of the total area of the Kingdom of Thailand, and the Philippine population is more than double of the Thai population. Please consider it. It is equivalent to 30 of 77 provinces being annihilated here. Please. If this happened in your home country I would write a letter like this, if I knew the channels I recommended were not extortion artists. Just so you know, the American Red Cross runs the Philippine branches. They are audited by the IRS (called the Infernal Revenue Service), and have a tight rein on incoming funds. The Red Cross has 24% operating costs, but the food ration I stated was after the 'admin cost reduction'. In the Philippines, 760 baht buys a LOT of rice and medicine, enough to feed and care for four people for two weeks or more. The link takes you to a secured page, and if you scroll to the bottom you can use PayPal, Internet ATM cards, and internet active Visa/Mastercards (all processed by American Banks, who are real b_astards about IRS audits, because the IRS is the only federal agency that can body slam them). It is cheap to be a hero today. Be a hero. Lead by example. Show that ten men and women of the West have more combined heart than all the millions of corrupt politicians here put together, and I am meaning all of Asia. The link is at http://www.redcross.org.ph/donatenow If you can help, please help. Please. Who knows who you might save? Maybe some child who grows up and cures leukemia, or invents cheap solar energy, or gets a job in Bangkok in a few years and inadvertantly meets one of your family in a zebra crossing (and you never recognize each other as you smile and go on)... Sincerely, hopefully, and with respect and civility, Me PS: Please forgive the longest post I have ever sent to Thai Visa Forum. This is important to me, and I don't even know anyone there that is in the scrum. Edited November 13, 2013 by FangFerang
