EU meets Thai Premier, strengthens economic ties with Thailand

BANGKOK, 14 November 2013 (NNT) – Vice-President and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Baroness Catherine Ashton has paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister and Defense Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the Government House.

Both parties expressed their gratitude for each other’s support and welcomed stronger economic relations as the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) have seen a significant progress.

Miss Yingluck also extended her gratitude for the EU’s warm welcome when she was on tour to Brussels, Belgium, early this year. She also expressed Thailand’s readiness to facilitate the upcoming visit next week of Mr. Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship, who is bringing European investors to the kingdom to discuss business opportunities with Thai entrepreneurs.

Miss Yingluck and Baroness Ashton also discussed a possibility for Thai passport holders to be exempted from Schengen Visa. Miss Yingluck told the EU High Representative that since Japan granted visa exemption to Thai nationalities, Japan has seen an increase of 85 percent in the number of Thai tourists.

And how many of them have overstayed their visa?

So did PM-Yingluck manage to flog any of the stockpiled-rice, during this "courtesy call", or does she have other more-pressing concerns ?

Poor Madame Ashton! How do you put it politely and diplomately correct to Ms Yingluck, that the Schengen countries have no interest in being flooded with Thai hookers??w00t.gif

But they would like to be flooded with rich Thai tourists, of which there are many. Plenty of hookers working in Europe already, so I don't see it as an issue. The positives for Schengen countries would far outweigh the negatives.

A smaller percentage than foreigners who overstay in Thailand. Why do you want to know. Nothing to do with you. For Japan to deal with.

Do you have the figures?

Why did you comment? It's nothing to do with you.

Ohhhh, brilliant? And at the moment, there are no rich Thai tourists visiting Europe?

So lets start. What exactly would be the positives of having no visas for tourist entry for Thai's into Europe?

Or were you being sarcastic?

Must be nice to have such innocent, naive almost child like trust .

Let the Thais have 30 days airport arrival and 15 on land border arrival... let's be at least reciprocal.

While they are at it with reciprocation. Let's all put the food import duty on all imported from Thailand to the EU at 60% and then give the 30% discount as part of the European free trade agreement. Because that's what Thailand does to imports from the EU.

Last time i heard it had been changed to 30 days land border entry, or does that not apply to EU passport holders?

That type of comment shows exactly where your hanging out. Thailand has so much more than that if you care to take a real look one day.

A couple months back Thailand was number one investor in high end London housing market. There some very serious Thai business people with assets all over the world.

Times are changing, yours is an old world view.

Within ten years Thailand could be far richer than Spain, Greece and load of others in the EU, so why not give them visa's, i would much rather have Thai's in Europe who 99% of the time are very well behaved and ultra polite.

I think it should be pretty obvious that more people will travel to a country if they don't need a visa. I've put off traveling to a few places because I can't be bothered with the hassle.Europe needs tourists, and they'd get millions more if they got rid of the need for visas for many countries. A few will overstay. So what? That happens in almost all countries will almost all nationalities.

Sorry but you're just another idiot that dosn't know what he is talking about!

Actually it doesn't. It's only UK, Germany, France and Italy. Maybe more countries in the EU will be included later but I doubt it will be all member states.

They could also have exchanged tips, on how to keep going the economies of countries in financial-difficulty, the EEC is surely a world-leader, and Yingluck needs to know all the dodges, to pass on to the real-PM in the (golf-course) bunker ! laugh.png

I would like to have some more info on this as the visa exemption was only 'accepted' a month or so ago. Did Thai queue up waiting for this, or is it a matter of before 100, now 185 tourists ?

That is simply not true. The European Parliamentary Government does not approve of prejudice toward any person of the basis of their profession.

It follows that many European Governments are of the same view.

This visit and it's two discussion topics is Excellent and we should congratulate PM Yingluck

for it and and the continuing outcomes expected from her Visit to 'Brussels', the seat of the European Government.

The near future visit to Thailand by the European Commissioner for Trade is also a worthy accolade.

The European government may not approve of the prejudice, but that doesn't stop them from applying it.

But it's not really about the profession, per se, it's more about being prejudiced against a nationality, and particularly the female sex of the nationality.

As to the "outcomes" of Yingluck's visits, you can discuss that when there are any.
