Hi

This morning i went to try received my WesternUnion transfer in Patong,i don't bring my passport with me coz passport for rent motorbike, i bring my ID Card , NO Bank want give me my transfer (Bangkok bank, Ayutaya), normally western union can received with ID Card, driving license or question/answer,
Why is like that here? i thing not just for fake coz passport can be fake same
Some body know if moneyGram is same? coz need to ask passport to renter motorbike, he don't want i use Moto if not passport, its not easy- boring...

OP, you can receive your western union using your Thai ID card, no problem.

I think your Thai driving license would also be accepted, as it is a recognized form of official ID in Thailand.

For foreigners, only passports are recognized as official form of ID.

Foreign ID cards have no validity in Thailand, it would be too easy to fake.

And as others wrote earlier, don't give your passport as deposit for anything, just rent your motorcycle somewhere else.

You should never give passport for renting motorbike - there are plenty places that will take copy at same price - you only have yourself to blame IMO

Yes i know but many place for rent motorbike, want only passport not copy

Just walk away and look for the next rental place. It's amazing how quickly the rental places will reconsider the passport request. But you might need to leave a cash deposit.

Tell them to get lost - there are also a lot that will take a photocopy. People do not understand how important a passport can be over here in times of trouble. General Rule of thumb - NEVER RELEASE YOU PASSPORT TO ANY THIRD PARTY - why do people always want to learn the hard way ?

I am pretty certain the OP is not Thai. But if they were, I still think a Thai DL would not be accepted. Not sure on that one.

I have also tried to use Thai DL at several banks. They will only accept original PP.

Yes Moneygram is the same.

Really? Not my experience at all. I've been transferring money to my in-laws in Thailand for four years and never one hitch.

I have rented many times in Patong with copy of passport, rates were the same.

What happens if renter declares some fake damage on return & will not give passport back, just as you are going to airport to catch plane back to your country ??

What he is saying, and I concur, is thst Paypal is really anal about a login with another IP, e.g. mobile phone in stead of laptop, and tends to block the account until it gets confirmed again.

Strange, as I've just sent 10,000 baht from Thai IP address [hotel wifi] through my iPhone from my UK PayPal account to Thai account and withdrew funds to Bangkok Bank account in less than minute.

Hard to sympathise when I've been doing this for years.

Agree, its also illegal for you to give someone your governments passport. Read the inside of the front cover (Its not yours!)

It may not be safe, but it's a bit much to say it's illegal to use it for security. According to the US State Department travelers tips:

The only time your passport should leave your

possession is if your hotel requires you to leave it at the desk during your stay. Some areas use this

procedure to register you with the local police—a routine policy. Don’t forget to ask for a receipt and

be very sure to retrieve your passport before continuing your trip.

Maybe they know your habits, but in this respect I am also not very fond of paypal.

I do use them though, for certain international payments they are the best option.

Good point, as there is no physical person watching individual transactions just a security model. There has to be an element of security.

Can you tell a bit more of this. What is the procedure and the costs when transferring money with paypal?

I have been using normal international transfer from my bank's website. The transfer takes often 3-4 days to receive to my account in Thailand.

handing over your passport to anyone other than a government official is against the law of the issuing country. It is not yours to do that with. It belongs to the State Department or equivilant of the issuing country. So you should never do it! There are many places that will only take a copy of the picture page and iff they do not, you can explain to them the rules (as they are printed inside your passport). As for Western Union... I have heard that sometimes that they can require an official government issued form of ID. DLs might work, but I would not expect that everywhere or every time (even at the same place).Get your passport back, tell them to make a copy , explain the situation and they will, I am sure, understand... simply because you are getting more money that you might spend with them!

|I have used Paypal in many different countries and only had to call them once to say that i will be using it from many destinations ( was in Nigeria at the time, so maybe that brought up a red flag). I do get an occasional email from them asking if i authorised this or that payment, but i always reply that yes, it was myself. Never had a problem with it since.

My experience is in generAL GOOD WITH pAYPAL, JUST TAke into account it takes 1 week to transfer from my Paypal account to my Thai bank account.

I use Paypal for online non-Euro transactions, so people can pay with credit card without any problems, the Thai solutions to this are IMO not acceptable. For amounts higher than around 30.000 Baht though a bank transfer from the US will be cheaper than a Paypal transfer, plus faster as well.

Thanks Steven. In that case it will not be optimal for my use.

NEVER give your passport to anyone .... especially motorcycle rental shops.

And ... of course you need a passport to receive transferred money and you should be happy that they ask to see it.

Oilinki - as stevenl states, for reasonable amounts PP works well. Though large amounts I would definitely shop around and do the math.

I transferred 10,000 baht last night from UK. The total charge to my UK debit card was £205 which included 50 baht PP transfer fee. It will take 3 to 5 business days to hit my Thai bank account. I'm in no rush for the cash, I just want it there in case I run short of funds towards the end of my holiday. If I don't use the cash, I will leave it in my Thai bank account for next holiday.

I have credit and debit cards with me but utilising them in LOS is even more expensive and run the risk of getting skimmed. They are for emergency only.

I also transfer a small amount to MILs account every month and it's the easiest and most convenient way for my needs.
