Zinedine Zidane without a doubt....and I'm an Australian.

zidane's the best player i've seen play live i think. seemed to cheat space where there wasn't any and just glided about the pitch. big bloke and very physical but with the grace of a ballerina. amazing sight.

I think you'll find that whilst many of us think Moyes is a bit of a plum we also accept he's of a much pleasanter demeanor and United will ultimately be cut a little more slack

Interesting.........................So now Moyes is in charge does that mean you will no longer be a typical ABU, making those stupid, attempted windup comments that have absolutely no truth or validity in them whatsoever, such as the one below that YOU made only yesterday.

BIGTOES3's reply was most apt.cheesy.gif

On to more serious matters, do you think ferguson will go for a 4-4-2 this weekend baring in mind the absence of Carrick and Jones?

You really are a TROLL 1zgarz5.gif.pagespeed.ce.GJfs_tQOQ-.gif At least you used the man's second name instead of your usual beatdeadhorse.gif.pagespeed.ce.adWp7jUAu anyway I am off for a burp.gif.pagespeed.ce.RBpw6FUyRR.gif

cocaine isn't performance-enhancing. imagine how good diego would have been without the beak?

He wasn't thrown out of a World Cup for cocaine use.

Ronaldo?? Luis Suarez is the greatest player every to grace the game

You have a very strange sense of humour-Suarez is a good player but a <deleted> of a bloke.

I started watching Man U as a 13 year old back in 1961 and have been fortunate to see some of the worlds greatest players perform- but to say who is the best is impossible,we all have our favourites mine was Denis Law-not the worlds best ever-just my favourite

That was my point exactly peter, it's a good point of discussion but impossible to say who is the best

i don't find there's anything at all enjoyable about watching ronaldo play. yeah he's very good but he's not fun is he? far too much preening, posing, playing to the cameras and look-at-me ego. messi's a joy to watch, plays like a kid in a schoolyard and does things that make your jaw drop. ronaldo's just sort of clinical. messi every day for me out of the two of them.

but carmine's right, at the moment maradona's still the greatest. though if argentina win next year's world cup that changes perhaps.

Nailed. For me its Maradona and Messi in nearly a dead heat. Ronaldo ? Terrific player, but not in the same league with Maradona and Messi, and his personality makes it hard to even consider him. A shame that in a way. He really can't do much about the fact that he's a <deleted>.

I wouldn't put Maradona in the same bracket as any of the greats, he's a dirty, cheating, drug-taking arse*ole.

I'm not obsessed about drugs. I just dislike dirty, cheating, drug-taking arse*oles like Maradona and Lance Armstrong.

it can be argued that ronaldo's had a better year than messi. yet he won no trophies. while ribery was possibly the best player in the excellent team that won the league title, german domestic cup and the european cup.

Ballon D'Or Delay Makes Mockery Of FIFA... Again

"The polls have closed. The votes have been counted. You can’t just change the rules because it’s not turning out the way you wanted."

Individual awards in team sports are illogical, nonsensical beauty pageants at the best of times, but you have to applaud FIFA for their efforts to strip the Ballon d’Or of any legitimacy whatsoever.

What was once France Football’s celebration of brilliance is now Sepp Blatter’s bunch of petrol station flowers, hastily snatched up to end an argument.

Voting for the Ballon d’Or was supposed to close last Friday and would almost certainly have resulted in a victory for Franck Ribery. This would hardly have been an injustice, given that the Frenchman was one of the shinier lights of a team that won the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Champions League.

Unfortunately for Ribery, he now stands the same chance of winning the award as you or I because FIFA, in their wisdom, have reopened the polls and invited the electorate to cast their vote again. The announcement was made, funnily enough, shortly after Cristiano Ronaldo had stood under the floodlights with his hands aloft, surrounded by the wreckage of the Swedish national team.

Now, let’s be clear. Ronaldo is not simply one of the greatest footballers of his generation, he is one of the greatest footballers of any generation. Drop this bronzed nugget of highly trained, highly disciplined preening man-flesh into any era you choose and I guarantee he would prevail. It is only because of Lionel Messi, who I remain unconvinced is of this earth, that he is rarely recognised as such.

If the Ballon d’Or should go to the man who made the greatest personal impact in the entirety of 2013 then there’s no doubt that Ronaldo should be a major contender, though poor Ribery, his arms laden with silverware, would like to stress that Ronaldo didn’t actually win anything this year.

But that’s not how the Ballon d’Or works. The polls have closed. The votes have been counted. You can’t just change the rules because it’s not turning out the way you wanted.

FIFA claim that the decision to re-open the polls, and to allow the electorate to change their votes, was purely due to low turnout. We asked them to release turnout figures, but they didn’t get back to us. Would an organisation as respected as FIFA really rig any kind of voting process to secure their preferred result? I guess we’ll never know.

Without proof, cynics might might suspect that this apparent gerrymandering is a frantic attempt by Sepp Blatter to repair the damage caused by the light-hearted Ronaldo skit he performed to the Oxford Students Union. This would be a great shame because that skit was actually quite funny and remains the best thing that Blatter has ever done for football.

Ronaldo, of course, didn’t agree. He wouldn’t. In a terse Facebook post, he said that Blatter’s jape, “shows clearly the respect and consideration that FIFA has for me, for my club and my country. Much is explained now.”

It’s quite a leap to take a bit of mickey-taking and use it as evidence of a shadowy conspiracy bent on denying Real Madrid and Portugal success. I mean, he only made fun of the way he walks. It was hardly a roasting.

But Blatter cannot afford to have one of the world’s most marketable superstars accusing him of favouritism. He needs to be seen to be loved by the great and the good. This is, after all, the man who hauled a grieving Nelson Mandela out of mourning for his granddaughter just for a photo opportunity at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Ronaldo might deserve to win the Ballon d’Or, he might not. In a year when European football was dominated by a truly great German team, the idea of an individual award is silly anyway. But changing the rules so late in the process just so that the boss looks good is ridiculous. Once again, FIFA are a laughing stock.

Thanks for that Stevie.

I'm still a little baffled by the apparent near consensus that the award would be between Ribery and Ronaldo. Messi continued to outshine both of them in 2013, though admittedly his club definitely came up short. But its a "what have you done for me lately" world and Messi's injury at the end of 2013 appears to leave him without a shot. But hey, its a beauty pageant.coffee1.gif

If Ronaldo's personality makes him hard to consider, what on earth is Maradona doing in your top two?

Anyway, comparing players from different generations is pretty much impossible. Think it is better to stick to who is the best of their generation. For me, of this current generation, Ronaldo and Messi are equally as good, but they have different styles and as Messi's is the more elegant and graceful one - probably a lot to do with how short he is and therefore how much lower his centre of gravity is - he usually ends up on top in the eyes of the critics and the fans. The view of the managers might be a little more interesting, especially if put in the hypothetical situation of being able to choose one of the two to go into their squad tomorrow.
