geovalin
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Cambodia’s highest court has freed an activist after she served more than a year in prison on charges widely condemned as trumped up to silence a government critic. The Supreme Court on Friday set Yorm Bopha, 30, free on bail and sent her case back to the Appeals Court for further investigation and a retrial. Yorm Bopha was imprisoned in September 2012 and convicted last December for plotting “intentional violence” against two men. Human rights groups say there was no evidence against her and inconsistent witness testimony. Rights groups say she was convicted for her efforts to defend her community against forcible evictions from land the government has leased to developers. They say the case is the latest example of the government misusing the judiciary to silence its critics. source http://asiancorrespondent.com/116267/cambodian-land-activist-yorm-bopha-freed-from-jail/
