Lost Passport and Overstay, Airport or Border

Featured Replies

Guys,

I have a friend who lost his passport and is now on 8 months overstay

He was issued a new passport thru Hong Kong in August and now has the funds to leave (approx. 50,000 baht)

Should he go out via Suvarnabhumi Airport or is a Cambodian border run an option from Rayong

Thank you

Flying out is the best option. There is the risk of being stopped at a check point on the way to the border.

The fine will be 20,000 baht.

Presumably there will be addition complications as the new passport will contain no stamps.

True, but the chance of a westerner getting stopped and asked for ID is next to zero PROVIDED that person travels by car to the border. Travelling by other means, such as by bus invites inspections by border police as they have to walk past all the passengers on the bus. I have travelled to Mae Sot about 15 times in both directions and I'm always waved through. My travelling companions, however, may not be. One time I had a Sri Lankan friend with me and at the checkpoint just before Mae Sot he was asked for his passport, but only the front page was scanned (to make sure he wasn't an Indo-Burmese). Since it was clear he was a non-Burmese foreigner, we were on our way within a minute. A Vietnamese friend was also asked for ID once south of Lampang, but the police officer told me to tell him. Otherwise, I am rarely stopped when I travel with him since he looks more Thai than anything else.

Although I do agree leaving via air is easiest as you don't have to travel hundreds of km to get to the border. If nothing else, to avoid embarrassment and to deal with more accommodating officials, leaving via a smaller crossing with few people crossing such as Tha Li in Loei province might not be a bad idea rather than going to a busy one. Also, there are more checkpoints close to the Burmese borders so going out via Laos where there are few checkpoints is better.

Troll post removed.

I think if you have no entry stamp in your passport you will have to sort that out before getting to airport.

Contact your embassy the will give you corretc information.

I can be so that your "friend" have to spend one day at IDC to get voulentary deported, in that case he will go there in the morning and will be taken to court and then back to IDC and spend some time in the "wating area" NOT locked up and the he will be escorted to the airport and handed over to airport police that will makesure he gets on the plane. There will be NO blacklist or problem returning to thailand.

Before, some years agon when you had long overstay and lost passport you could just go to immigration in bangkok to get a new entry stamp in your new passport as long that you showed the that you had confirmd ticket to leave the country the same day. But Now I think you have to go trough IDC, but not sure, maybe there some outher way.

Not correct. If you have the 20,000 baht and 1900 baht to pay for a 7 day extension appication they will still do it.

Contact an embassy? They will be of no help.

Airport will be his best option. And Im sure at the airport they have handle such case on a regular basis.

Ok, as I said not sure. I just told the way that I had to do and that outher guys in the same situation had to do.

Why not contact embassy? They can give advice on the best way to go about things when have overstay, maybe different from conutry to country. Anyway if you do the IDC thing you pay only about 13,000 baht for overstay, but if you can still do it in airport for 20,000 baht maybe thats the best option.

The lower fine is only if you stay locked up until you make a court appearance.

The only people that end up in IDC are those caught with an overstay. And many of those are facing other criminal charges.

If you have the money to pay the fine voluntarily you will not be locked up.

From reports I have read about what an embassy suggested was wrong.

But there is one thing called voluntarily deportation, Then like I wrote in the outher post you will spend one day at IDC ( not being look up ). Many embassys including swedish and brittish offer this "fast track" deportation to pepole with long overstays, lost passport and little money. At least they did back in 2011.

Hi. I lost my passport, I received my new one but I needed to get a copy of my entry stamp in it before they would let me out, I did this at BKK airport with emigration.

Any time at the IDC is being detained (locked up). It is possible something could be arranged so that fine could be reduced but it has to be done by a judge. It also would still require a ticket out of the country and immigration taking them to the airport.

Most people manage to find the funds the 20k baht to pay the fine and leave on there own.

Any documentation that your friend has in regards to passport being lost (police report, letter to embassy, etc) would be useful as well.

The police report was sent to Hong Kong with the application for his new passport, a copy was not kept nor was the original returned

Terry

The time I lost my passport the local police wrote the report in their daily log book and just gave me a copy of that page. You might check back with your local police for another copy.
