Just wondering if anyone knows the best deals for a day trip to either ''Tachai Island'' or ''Similan Island''

There are several companies which run day trips speedboats out of Khao Lak to the Similans. I work for a company which has a catamaran that does day trips there. PM me if you want more info.

They had a whale shark at Elephant Head last week.

What kind of trip are you looking for, diving or snorkeling? I would not recommend the combination trips where both divers and snokelers are welcome, but would recommend a dedicated trip. And as Joe said, the boats depart from Tap Lamu, so a departue from Khao Lak would be closer.

Ok, answered your PM.

If you're staying in hotel etc. on Phuket you can also do the trip from Phuket, that would be a lot easier than making your way to Khao Lak first.

If you are staying in Khao Lak, with a bit of looking around you should be able to find Similan@1800 Baht, and Koh Ta Chai@2300 Baht. If they have to pick you up in Phuket it will be a bit more.

Third possibility, Surin Islands@2400 Baht.
