passes for bts and mrt travel for 8 days.

I'll be in bkk for 9 days 8 nights and i remember getting some pass the last time i was there with a 50bht deposit. I think it was for a few journeys most of the time i was you know changing notes into coins and keying in crap both on the bts and the mrt and it really sucks cos the mrt is a totally different train line from the bts so i suppose you cannot use a bts pass on an mrt.

Anyway guys what sort of pass should i get for train travel and do i need a seperate one for mrt travel?

Will be staying near chao phraya river so saphan taksin bts will be the closest and will be ferried there.

I would recommend the rabbit card for BTS. They have two kinds one where you just top up money and it will be deducted per trip. For the other type you will purchase trips in advance, which need to be used within 30 days and are not refundable. For the MRT they only have a top up card which you can purchase at any MRT counter. Not sure if they have another type of top up card for the MRT.

You want the Rabbit Card for the BTS. It is a stored value card that can be loaded with cash from which your fare will be automatically deducted when leaving BTS stations. There is a small fare discount for using the Rabbit card vs buying a paper ticket through the end of the year. You can also load trip packages on the card which is probably not worth it for the time you are going to be here (you have to know where you are going and how many trips you need to be able to calculate if it actually represents a savings). Unused cash on the card can be refunded, unused trips cannot. The card can be purchased at the ticketing windows of BTS stations and costs 50 baht plus a 50 baht deposit plus 100 baht of credit for a total minimum outlay of 200 baht. The card can also be used on the BRT and at major retailers but you'll need something different for the MRT.

Ok i got this information from the site

Standard Rabbit is available at all BTS ticket offices

Standard Rabbit can be obtained for 300 Baht, which includes 150 Baht issuing fee, 50 baht deposit and 100 Baht stored value for spending

Click here to check for Standard Rabbit special promotions

So i have to pay 150 bht for the issuing fee so to issue me the rabbit card i pay 150, 50 for the deposit and just 100 for trips. So out of the 300 bht that you have to pay only 1/3 of it is used on trips?

You tell me the minimum is 200 but from the site itself it's 300. So i figure it's 300 now? Sounds rather expensive actually. Probably better to just queue up and pay direct like this.

The price is 50 baht in 2013 and will increase to 150 baht for 2014. I suppose it depends on how you value your time but I think it is a stretch to call 50 baht expensive. I consider it a phenomenal value as I don't have to wait in long change lines then long ticketing lines. Fares are also slightly discounted when using the card but only through the end of 2013.

Edit: Just to be clear, it is a stored value card which means you load as much cash on it as you like. The funds can be topped up and are refunded when you return the card as is the deposit. Rereading your comment of only 1/3rd of the value being available for trips made me realise this might not have been clear.

OK let me clarify. You mentioned the 150 bht thing will only be in 2014 so it's right now 50 bht ok.

The comment i made about the 1/3 of 300 is correct.

Now that we have confirmed or according to you that 150bht is only availble in 2014 so it goes like this. You want to buy a rabbit card with 300bht anyway you have to pay 150 + 50 just to own the rabbit card with 0 value am i correct? You pay the 50 bht deposit so that you will return the card to get back the 50 but you have already paid 150 just to own the card and even though it's 50bht right now next year is just around the corner.

Suffice to say you pay 200 (150 + 50 deposit) to just own the rabbit card with 0 value.

See so if you have 300bht you only have 1/3 left for the trips whcih is 100 bht.
