Am I the only one who finds yellow shirts wearing Guy Fawkes masks offensive?

It is a powerful symbol, strongly associated with the values, ideology, and state of mind that would make yellows and reds alike eat their shirts, if of course they bothered to look closely and had a capacity to understand. People in black-and-white masks bashed church of scientology (This is how it started. Guy Fawkes himslef and his gunpowder plot are hardly relevant, those kids were inspired by devoutly anarchist franchise V for Vendetta.), occupied wall-street and LSE, supported Assange and Kim Dotcom, defaced Vatican's web site, and played noticable part in eliminating baathism in Levant...

To be fair: By doing that they also paved the way for shariah, dehumanization of women, animal torture and other perks of Muslim rule, but that's a different story.

...All in less than 5 years. Of course the mask is a symbol of protest, but it's also closely related to reason and rationality, personal freedom, techno- and crypto-anarchism, libertarianism, objectivism, information dissimination, privacy advocacy, information society, scientism, hacktivism, minarchism, laissez-faire... And to petty mundane fascism since recently. <deleted>?

I think they should see the movie, all of them.

And I'm not pro-Thaksin.

most of us know what guy fawkes stood for so it looks like they are sending out a message.

What kind of message? "Convert to catholicism"? or "Blow up protestant scum"? or "Convert to catholicism, and then blow up protestant scum?"

(Not such a bad idea, protestants in Thailand are your typical destructive cult, led by a buch of crooks.)

Sorry, I still think that Fawkes is irrelevant.

I don't think you understand the intellect of the average 'red-shirt'. Do you really think a farm-worker from Isarn who is working for the red shirts knows who Guy Fawkes was? Most non-British people don't know who he was.

You think too much.

I think you are confused. Or may be I am. Yellow shirts (upper-middle class, educated, elitist, consider themselves smart, which makes them vulnerable for all kinds of manipulation) are the ones in the masks, aren't they?

Cant be much going on in your life if thats what worries you, a bunch of paid protesters wearing masks, really ?

You give them way too much credit and certainly too much importance.

Who is paying the anti government posters?

Whoever needs them, they'll wear whatever you want them too for few hundred baht a day, easier than working and more fun !

Come on Charlie, yer a bit confused there mate. The government and anti government protestors are two separate groups of people. Sometimes even in the same family. They really believe in their causes. The pro government protestors get paid and the anti government ones don't. There is not a job classification in Thailand called activist for hire yet. And it's not nice that you should make up stuff about things that kill people.

Serious business and best left to people who have some idea about what they are talking about.

@ thailiketoo

I dont doubt it, there are some who are "believers" etc but its the culture here, they get paid to participate, there was a bus parked in our town a few days ago offerring 500 baht for anyone who wanted to go! They get paid to go vote in local elections too.

A few will be staunch believers who then get 10 more "followers".

If you want to post your opinion , you are entitled to it, and thats fine, but please dont get personal, I do not "make stuff up"

I post what I know and believe to be true based on my experience living here.

At least 1/3 of the headcount should believe in "the cause", or the biomass will quickly rot to the point of desintegration. It happened to a "redguard" project from my country, was fun to watch =)

OK cool. Who was paying them? If you know they were getting 500 baht for what, say a week of protests, that's 3 baht an hour you must know who is paying them? So who is paying these people 3 baht an hour to go protest. PS Where do I get people to work for 3 baht an hour. Nothing personal at all. You did say people were getting paid 500baht to protest right?

I am offended that so many people are continually offended by EVERYTHING!

Why is it that when people dont agree with something they alway need to say they are "offended." How does this insult you? You may not agree, you may think they are idiots, you may even be right. But how does this insult you?

To restate. You know someone was paying people 500baht to protest and you don't know who or for how long. Right? And that they get paid for local elections too but you don't know who or how much.

Why would you post such nonsense? The protests are going to last 3 or 4 days maybe a week. That works out to 2 or 3 baht an hour and one also has to provide food and lodging.

It also makes a big difference if the protestors are pro or anti government. The thread is about Guy Fawkes masks worn by Yellow shirts. What is your post about? Just some random anti stuff?

I don't know anything about you, so I can't give you a good analogy. But most likely you have something in your life that you respect, consider worthy, positive, and moderately important. May be this "thing" was much more important for you in the past, and memories get better, and more refreshing every year. I suppose an ex-military could feel something like that. If you were an ex-military, what would say if you saw a herd of calibans, peeing on some symbolically and sentimentally significant military trinket? (Military have lots of those.)

Appalled? Geez, get a life already.

Oh, come on. English is not my first language, and the epithet I picked is stronger than I assumed. I am annoyed, and unpleasantly surprized.

Charlie fix your quotes I didn't say that.

Problem with mobile........previous "quote" deleted.

Ok, firstly, no one said anything about time scale, that was your assumption and then manipulation to make the amount per hour small, in some way to prove a point.

I have no idea what it was for, who was offering it, or what was expected in return. Its none of my business and I learned along time ago not to get involved in such things. Its safer that way.

I do not go around interviewing people in order to back up a Thai Visa posting. I merely state what I know and what I believe to be true.

Just like I know that there are many in small rural villages that would work a week for 500 baht ! and would welcome a trip to Bangkok for a "party" and free food as a break from the rural nothingness of a small farming village and consider it "exciting".

You stick to your opinion and what you know or believe to be true and I'll do the same.

OK I agree. You have stated that 1. Thai people will work for 500 baht a week. 2. Thai people would protest and welcome a trip to Bangkok for free food and a party.

Both of those are nonsense and if you believe them you are wrong. That is my opinion. If you can garner any support that Thais work for 500 baht a week let them post now or forever hold their tongue.

I am sure you did not mean to look down at red shirts and farm-workers in your post.

But in the case you did, you may want to try to understand the intellect of the average yellow shirt / Dems supporter (and associated colors).

These are the ones who like to wear these cute little white masks.

And they consider themselves as the 'educated elite'

My girlfriend comes from a Christian family, or so I thought before she showed me their sermons, and rites... I mean services.I don't know what convention is this, but they:

-Devaluate family (you husband will leave you, your brother will leave you, your church will never leave you)

-Devaluate real life, accomplishments, etc. (only that which happens after death really matters) - something I would never expect from any kind of protestant

-Use cheap rhetoric, and primitive NLP - the guy was pointing to himself while quoting the God, and repeating the same phraze over and over every minute or two (something like "I am Alpha and Omega", but not that)

-All the preachers claim to have a direct line to white-bearded gentleman on the cloud, like "I was minding my own business, when god came to me and told me..."

-They talk awfully lot about money (everything you give to us will return to you tenfold, but if you cheat, you are forked, you and your family), every member of congregation is supposed to give 10% of earnings

-Rites are all about supressing the consciousness, everything is by the book - hysterical behaviour of preachers, wall of sound, bright light, weaving dancing, speaking in tongues, etc.

-The worst thing - they can "heal" all known deseases by touching a victim's forehead. When I said to her that they are killing people this way - many will go to priest instead of doctor, she told me how they were treating her dengue for one week or more, until her budhist grandmother came and took her to hospital. That was dam_n close.

Need more? I'm sure I can remember something. Do you know what are they?

Excellent, I've made several notes about that.............sermon.

Now, again, what has it got to do with predominantly Buddhist protesters, in Bangkok, wearing masks?
