Land crossing into Thailand with german passport- how many days

I'm in Indonesia atm and met a young German backpacker who was asking how many days he would get in the passport if crossing by land border.

I vaguely remember a new immigration rule stating that 30 days would be granted. Unsure if this extends to the Deutsche nationality. Can you advise? Whilst I have your attention what about Oz passports?
