I've done some checking. In December 2013, Sportsbet released its odds for teams reaching the Final 8 in Season 2014.

Below represents each team's ladder position ( ) based on those odds, followed by each team's true ladder position at the end of Round 23 { }

Sydney (1) {1}

Fremantle (2) {3}

Hawthorn (3) {2}

Geelong (4) {4}

North Melb (5) {6}

Collingwood (6) {11}

Richmond (7) {8}

W. Coast (8) {9}

Essendon (9) {7}

Adelaide (10) {10}

Carlton (11) {13}

Pt Adelaide (12) {5}

Gold Coast (13) {12}

Bulldogs (14) {14}

Brisbane (15) {15}

St Kilda (16) {18}

GWS (18) {16}

Other than transposing the positions of Collingwood and Port Adelaide, no other team is more than two positions out.

Well done Sportsbet. Kudos where they are due!!

John Longmire wins AFL Coaches' Association coach of the year award

Sydney coach John Longmire had a small win over his long-time friend and Hawthorn counterpart Alastair Clarkson before the AFL grand final.

Longmire beat Clarkson by one vote to take out the Allan Jeans Coach of the Year award.

The honour was announced on Tuesday night at the AFL Coaches Association Awards evening.

Swans chief executive Andrew Ireland praised Longmire after a brilliant season that culminates in an appearance in Saturday's grand final.

O'Keefe's officially retired, I would expect him to take Stewie Dew's spot next year should Stewie get the Crows gig. Makes good sense and pleases me :D

Eddie should put his efforts into keeping his own players happy...

Eddie McGuire’s grandstanding against Sydney’s cap allowance leaves Swans chiefs exasperated

IT IS Grand Final week and yet again the Sydney Swans have to defend their COLA position.

This time it was SEN Radio and after a Dorothy Dixer first up, the next question to Swans chief executive Andrew Ireland demanded that he answer to Eddie McGuire's continual whinging about the advantages the Swans receive with the cost of living allowance.

“It's reasonably poor form from Eddie,” Ireland said, clearly exasperated with McGuire's grandstanding and campaigning.

It's been a long-time campaign from the Collingwood president. Even on preliminary final weekend, McGuire, who was wearing his Fox Footy hat and not his Collingwood president's hat, couldn't resist having two cracks at the Swans.

In the pre-match he predicted the Swans would win by $2 million, while the rest of the panel wavered between 10 and 25 points.

Ed cacked himself with his humour. Others panellists smiled. At home, I thought it was pretty pathetic.

Here we were two minutes before bounce down on the second biggest weekend on the AFL calendar, where the underdogs were taking on the champs, and McGuire's making political statements.

I wish Ed would give it a restcoffee1.gif

Will be interesting to see how they handle the Beams request.

Rumour has it Alistair Clarkson will be head coach of the Crows next year.

That would be BIG news

Hell yeah.

According to Andrew Jarman and his inside information. This could also be bs I suppose, it is big mouth Jarman after all.

He even said Clarkson will be earning between 1.1 and 1.2 million a year while at the Crows.

Bookies wind in Clarko as next Crows coach
HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson is the bookmakers' favourite to be named as Brenton Sanderson's successor at Adelaide, despite being contracted until the end of 2016.
One bookmaker has wound the Hawks' coach into $1.45 odds to take over at the Crows after Hawthorn faces the Sydney Swans in Saturday's Grand Final.
The reigning premiership coach, who has steered the Hawks to three consecutive Grand Finals, signed a contract extension in early 2014 that tied him to the club for the next two seasons.
Former Crow Andrew Jarman made the extraordinary claim on Triple M radio that Clarkson could be announced as Adelaide's next coach as soon as next week.
"Next Tuesday there’ll be an announcement to say that the Adelaide Crows have signed Alastair Clarkson to a five-year deal, $1.4 (million) a year," Jarman said.
"The intel did say if they win it’s definitely done, if they lose then he could stay."

That's weird because Clarkson is earning that at the Hawks right now....IMO he'll be crazy to go if they win this Saturday.

Doubt they will win.

I get your point, but who knows what the thoughts are behind closed doors. Maybe he feels I've done all I can at Hawthorn, time to move on.

All I know is Adelaide need a coach, and for 1.4 million a year, I'd move to Adelaide as well.

Oh wait, I already do live here.

An interesting article about Sydney, Andrew Ireland , and some of their paths to success.

...Their list has evolved considerably and unconventionally and the grand final team will include seven ex-Swans rookies - Harry Cunningham, Heath Grundy, Jake Lloyd, Mike Pyke, Dane Rampe and All-Australians Kieren Jack and Nick Smith.

Five players were originally taken at 30-plus in the draft - Dan Hannebery (30), Nick Malceski (64), Luke Parker (40), Sam Reid (38) and Adam Goodes (43). Only Jarrad McVeigh (5), Gary Rohan (6) and Lewis Jetta (14) were Swans first-round picks.

Four players were snared via trades from other clubs - Rhyce Shaw, Josh Kennedy, Ted Richards and Ben McGlynn (another ex-rookie).

To focus only on Tippett and Franklin is missing the key message: the first-class alignment between recruiting and development that relies on great recruiting networks, good talent identification and specific roles, and an exceptional development and coaching program.

TOM JONES TO HEADLINE AFL GRAND FINAL PRE-GAME ENTERTAINMENT

http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/music/tom-jones-and-ed-sheeran-have-a-kick-on-the-mcg-ahead-of-their-afl-grand-final-performance/story-e6frfn09-1227070309425

My Mum loved Tom Jones way back when he was a sex bomb.

Times have a changed. Jones is now a senior citizen, slower and croakier. Still, his performance could only be better than the leftover meatloaf that was dished up before the 2012 Grand Final.

My Mum is now elderly, and her fashion sense has changed somewhat since the Swingin' 60s'. I wonder if any pairs of these will be tossed up on stage in the direction of the Welsh crooner.

Oh, weather forecast tomorrow for The Sporting Capital of the World: Partly cloudy, top of 24 C. Sudden cold depression in Hawthorn area later.

Crikey, that is some list management committee the Swans must have.

Luke Parker at 40....stop it!

WC's list manager is a dud,

Parker is a must keep player for SYdney.

Be interested who St Kilda want for the #1 pick.

Well, it's that time again. Good luck to our Sydney boys

Mr Smith, Rip and BookMan. I hope your boys get the

chocolates.

As for me, I usually prefer the interstate club to win but

I don't have a problem with the hawks, so may the best team win.

This is the first grand final since I have seen, featuring the Swans, where they have been favorites.
