Cloud: Free Online 15GB Backup & Synchronisation + 50GB Storage

I know there have been other posts on this subject but I have seen nothing informing readers of the 15GB (20GB if you use my link) and 50GB offerings.

This post is divided into two sections.

The first part is a lengthy description of Barracuda Networks latest offering called 'Copy', a rather smart cloud Backup & Synchronisation application offering 15GB of free 'backup' storage and the second is for 50GB of free storage from the founder of Megaupload, Kim Dotcom

Copy:

I have found what seems to be a very good online (cloud) backup and synchronization service with 15GB of free storage or 20GB if you use my link. The site works the way I want and not the way the others dictate as per Dropbox, Sky-Drive etc. You may well ask why I like this app over the other offerings. That is simple. Twenty GByte of free storage and the beauty of this app is that in order to back up and synchronize a file or folder on your hard drive all that is necessary is to place a SHORTCUT to the file/folder you want backed up in the C:\Copy directory. From now on everything else is automatic; when you update and save the local file the online cloud 'Copy' is automatically updated due to the shortcut with the proviso you have an active internet connection and are logged onto the Copy website. If you use Dropbox or Sky-Drive you are required to have the original file in their directory. (There are methods of fooling these systems but the technical details are beyond this post)

IMPORTANT: If you are going to use my recommendation then please use the following referral link which will give each of us an extra 5 GByte of lifetime storage completely free of charge i.e. you will have an initial 20GByte of storage. The referral site is:-

Now to the installation procedure:-

To get your extra free 5GByte of storage, and help me with my 5GByte referral bonus, you must install their app which makes a 'Copy' folder on your hard drive. This is similar to the Dropbox & Sky-Drive procedure. During the installation you may be asked to permit the Copy application to change your firewall settings. Don't worry, the Copy app will add an exception to the firewall status to permit connections to your PC at anytime; it does not open a port. By the way, the Chrome browser may or may not throw up a malicious malware/site warning. This depends on the status of the liaison between Google and Barracuda Networks, who are the providers of Copy. Again you can ignore the warning. Barracuda Networks have been in the web security business for many years and now they are branching out hence the generous initial storage and referral bonus strategy. Their business plan seems to be to go after the corporations and use the individual as a freebie for publicity and a sounding board. Apologies for that digression but I do have my salesman hat on, I want the extra free 5GB of storage. After installing the app go to your email and reply to the email address confirmation Copy will have sent you. That's all..........

and you now have 20GByte of storage and I will have received an additional 5 GByte.

How about this as the belt n braces of a backup/synchronization system. If you accidentally delete the original from your hard drive, whilst logged in, the 'Copy' will be gone as well. However, there is no need to panic. The real beaut of this system: if you delete a file from your 'Copy' sync'ed directory it is deleted from the on-line copy but it is AUTOMATICALLY placed in the on-line Copy Recycle Bin. Is that bril or what? You really have to try very hard to mess up this system.

I can no longer find the 'Copy' Recycle Bin and all I can remember is that to access, you had to use the web-browser Beta. If anyone discovers how to access the Recycle Bin please post here.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Mega:

I would expect many to know of Kim Dotcom and the ensuing extradition proceedings regarding his foray into Torrents. Kim is claiming to have turned over a somewhat new leaf and is now offering 50GB of free storage on his new venture:-

If you do use this storage do please remember the FBI seized his Megaupload servers so be carefull as to what you upload. Also, Mega seems to work much better using the Chrome browser.

For background reading you can look at these links:-

and of course, we all know Flickr now gives 1TB of storage for photographs smile.png

With regard to 'Copy' I wrote:

I have now found the 'Recycle Bin'. My mistake was the 'Recycle Bin' is not in the web browser at all but accessed from the 'Copy' desktop icon in the Windows system tray.

Right click on the 'Copy' icon

Select the "Preference" option from the 'Copy' window that has popped up

Select the Account tab followed by 'Manage my files' from the 'Copy' window that has opened

The new window has an 'Undelete' tab where all previously deleted files are stored in their respective directories

Select the required files and click 'Save' to restore

See, simple when you know how. I know these instructions seem complicated but it is very easy when you have installed the 'Copy' application on your Windows PC and run through the steps outlined above.
