BANGKOK: -- The Marine Department plans to improve the Chao Phraya Express boat service and the Khlong Saen Saeb boat service by upgrading the 89 piers.

Director-general Sornsak Saensombat said detailed plans for water transport safety in 2014 would be submitted to Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt this month, adding that the existing 27 piers on the Saen Saeb canal will be roofed and adjusted to match the number of commuters.

He said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration would also be asked to keep the canal at an appropriate level. The department will also work with the Chao Phraya Express Boat Co Ltd to improve 62 piers along the river.

It also plans to get all 80 Chao Phraya Express boats equipped with a GPS system by next year in order to control their speed.
