BANGKOK: -- AN ANTI-GOVERNMENT protester who was shot in the chest and stomach during Thursday's clash at the Bangkok Youth Centre succumbed to his injuries at Phramongkutklao Hospital yesterday, taking the death toll from the incident to two, a doctor said.

The Public Health Ministry reported yesterday that as of 9am about 154 people including protesters, journalists and police had been injured in the clash between police and anti-government protesters at the Bangkok Youth Centre (Thai-Japan), known as the Thai-Japanese Stadium.

Of the injured, 38 remained at eight hospitals in Bangkok. One was being treated at an intensive-care unit.

The second fatality was identified as Wasu Suchantabut, a 30-year-old anti-government protester. He succumbed yesterday at 3.45am, according to Colonel Peeraphon Pokpong, a director of Pramongkut Hospital's Emergency Department.

Wasu underwent surgery on Thursday night after being shot in the stomach with a small-calibre live round during the protest at the centre. He was sent to the hospital at about 2pm on the same day. A medical team found that the bullet entered his stomach and exited through his back. The small bullet damaged his liver, pancreas and right kidney, and severed major blood vessels.

But doctors did not find any bullet fragments inside his body.

The first victim to die was Pol Snr Sergeant Narong Pitisitthi, 45, after he was shot in the right chest. He lost a lot of blood on the way to hospital. Doctors tried to give him artificial respiration but were unable to save him.

Meanwhile, 45-year-old taxi driver Phet Choosrikhwan, who was assaulted by a group of anti-government protesters on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road on Thursday, was undergoing treatment. A scan showed his brain was in good condition, but Phet had bruising on his head.

According to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Erawan Emergency Medical Service Centre, three people were in a critical condition.

The first was a man who received a gunshot wound to the head and underwent surgery at Rajavithi Hospital.

A second man was struck on the head during a physical assault and admitted to Ramathibodi Hospital.

The third victim, a woman, was shot in the left side of her chest and lung. She was admitted to Phyathai Hospital.

Meanwhile, a security guard for the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee shot in head at the clash at Din Daeng can now respond slightly to doctors' queries and open his eyes after surgery yesterday, according to Rajvithi Hospital director Dr Udon Chaowarin.

Suthirak Khumsom, a rescue volunteer from Ruam Katanyoo Foundation, said he witnessed a 30-year-old female rescue volunteer being shot at around 5pm on Thursday while she was helping to transfer injured people from the stadium's Gate No 3 to Din Daeng Police Station. The bullet pierced the window of the rescue vehicle and struck her in the chest, Suthirak said.

The victim was admitted to Phyathai Hospital, where she is under close observation pending referral to Rajavithi Hospital.

"This is not the first time that a rescue volunteer has been shot during a clash. Even though we are frightened, we have to help others, no matter who they are," Suthirak said.

The real heroes and heroines in the current crisis. They don't even want to be there.

Very doubtful the Ainti-Governmen Protesters would shoot at Rescue Personnel who are heping those persons injured from the conflict. Especially since the bullet reportedly passed thru a Rescue Vehicle before hitting the Female Rescue person in the chest.

A sniper's aim is not usually that bad.

Good thing those in power, on both sides, don't care about how they appear to the international/western community, because right now they look like a bunch of uncivilized thugs without any face.

How can you jump to conclusion just like that?

Small caliber bullet goes through stomach, several other organs, and exits the back. Thai forensic say no bullet fragments found in the body. Police have already stated Thai police didn't fire live bullets.

How could a small caliber go clear through someone in mid section and not leave any fragments on some bone, tissue or skin? In order to go through a human being like that, one would have to assume that it was a high powered rifle and not a pistol.

More like monkeys running amok inside the zoo.

In another thread I read this morning the army chief said that the same people who instigated the violence in 2010 were trying to do it again, he didn't go as far as identifying any groups or individuals, but it does appear as though someone is trying to kick things into a higher gear, and since the majority of protesters have remained relatively non violent and probably don't want to be seen as violent, I don't think the killer(s) would be part of the anti-government protest movement, and don't see what benefit the government could reap from instigating violence.

If it went through below the rib cage it may not hit any bone. If it didn't hit any bone it is unlikely to break up in any way and leave fragments.

another tragic death, in the silly political game for money and power. :( My common sense tells me, it's unlikely that it was the police, as then there would have been more cases. It's more likely, that some other nut job with a gun (likely a red shirt) went bat shit crazy. Whoever did it and why, it's sad either way.

Another coup is coming. Whether legal or military or reform.

That taxi driver's brain is in good condition? He rolls up to an angry mob, shouts at them, and throws bottles of red liquid at them? Sent from my Nexus 4 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Which is absolutely and clearly justification enough, for a bunch of guys, going at him and beating him into a pulp...in a land of bratty no-brainers with the moral maturity of 7 year old's!

By the way: I am loosing track a bit of who died, when, where and by what, but may all of them rest in peace!

This is so senseless!

The not so peaceful protests will continue. Suthep will continue to call them peaceful while he whips the crowd into

a frenzy. He is all in with his party not registering for the election. Painted himself into a corner and must get

the military to intervene and install him as supreme leader. blink.png

my old 9 mm pistol in farang land shoots bullets that are outside steel inside lead (spelling) I am sure they would pass people without being damaged.

And so Thailand moves closer to a civil war, which is Suthep's ultimate goal.

Wise to get out sooner rather than later.

Only way to sort this out is when one side destroys the other.

At the moment it's all jockeying for position for when a certain inevitable event takes place.

The red liquid could be petrol. he could have set alight and fatally burn many innocent protesters.

I did not say he deserves to to kicked half dead, but it is his fault in making a scene to look like he is a terrorist.

Thanks god he is up and running back to normal now.

and for the record, any government in the west would have stood down after the NACC ruling yet still we have PTP and Thaksin refusing to give way because if they do they will all end up in jail once an investigation into government finance is completed

I'll tell you this - when they (PTP crooks) eventually step down or are forced out - if they are all not on the run abroad within hours I'll eat my keyboard - these people have 2x choices right now - cling on like an unwanted skidmark and wait for the brush or take the escape down the flusher never to be seen again like their evil sponsor in Dubai - how many deaths/murders is he responsible for - anyone care to count

Not necessarily "damaged" but forensically leaving some "trace" metallic elements that good forensics should be able to make a determination.

Thailand has achieved what so many other countries aspire to. A classless society.

Those at the top have no class whatsoever.
