We have such a good relationship with the motorbike taxi boys of our moobaan. We use them to run errands, fetch and carry stuff, can even trust them to pay small bills for us.

When we have food left over from meals we save it for the yaams and motorbike lads. They must be the only taxi boys eating smoked salmon and caviar in Bangkok.

Not surprized that a fight with fatalities is called a scuffle here because in the midst of this their Government let 3-500 people die in the traffic and repeated twice a year.

The road death toll is around 26,000 annually, and apparently gun related deaths are not far behind at around 20,000.

71 and 55 per day respectively.

Yes, private ownership of handguns should be outlawed. There is not a gun 'culture' in Thailand other than a criminal one. many lives would be saved by a total ban on gun ownership.

Is there not enough around now, still, to be a huge problem.

Then following any outlawing, the ones left will be hot items at hugely inflate prices to be purchased by any potential 'user'?

Like the possible solutions to the ridiculous carnage on the roads............The horse has probably already bolted.

Not saying try to do something meaningful about it, but as much as I love Thailand and since travelling here in 1975, solutions with any sign of a remedy seems merely to by pi__ing in the wind.

I love Thailand and am happily married to a Thai, but there is absolutely a missing link here in such a country and capitol that looks to the eye, so much in comparison to the rest of the modern world.

It frightens me enough to keep my young family away from here for most of the time, except a few careful days of holidaying and spending time with the Rel's!

Thai Law Forum Gun Fundamentals:

"Under Thai law, it is mandatory for all individuals to obtain authorization prior to the possession, manufacturing, using, selling, purchase, ordering, and importation of firearms. Possession of ammunition for use with a gun other than one which you have obtained a license for owning and/or using is prohibited. You are not allowed to bring a gun with you into a city, neighborhood, or public areas without a license for carrying one on you. Exceptions do exist for emergencies depending on the situation, and for government officials or law enforcement bodies of certain types."

Do you really believe that:

1) The Thai people would accept a total ban?

2) If the ban were invoked that criminals would not obtain them anyway?

3) That Thai LE could/would enforce such a ban?

4) That the guns used in this gunfight were 'authorized' (legally possessed)?

Absolute rubbish, These people were not using privately licenced handguns, they were using illegally bought or manufactured weapons. How will banning private ownership stop this ??.
