Word on the street is there is going to be a complete stop work on the 13th of Jan. This includes all of Phuket public services, airports, banks and transport. Anyone else heard this?

I have not heard the rumors. I would assume it would not happen, because of the baht.

The Bangkok shutdown might still affect to here. Time to purchase important items, like beer, before those run out on local shops.

Tanks will roll out. It's inevitable.

Yes, agree. The sooner the better IMO to stabilize things.

I also agree, however, what would another coup acheive?

Parliment has already been disolved.

New elections are to be held in February.

Vote buying will start, from both sides, but it will ensure the same political party will again have the numbers and be installed, once again. It has happened before, and it will happen again.

The tanks (military coup) would only be an interim, or caretaker Government, until the inevitable.

So, on that basis, unless the country is on the brink of civil war, why would the tanks roll in? Even if the military take over control of the country, they themselves, would have to call an election date eventually, and it's only going to be what is going to happen in February anyway.

So, the Thai Army is probably thinking more about the damge to the economy and/or tourism, even if it was bloodless coup, like before, and would hope to stay out of it, unless bullets start flying and bombs start exploding. That said, it will be interesting how they would handle national civil disobedience, such as, a "general strike."

Let's get back to the General Strike idea. I'd like to know as i am due to go into both the Labour Office and Immigration on 13 January. So far as I can tell it's only a Bangkok event. For sure I will deal with my appointments earlier on 10 or 11 January and not take the chance.

It's all over the Thai/Phuket news channels. I am surprised the Thai linguists and general experts aren't confirming the story

Disagree. This is only about Bangkok. My 'linguist' is my Thai wife. Nothing yet on the media that this will spread to Phuket;

I will bet a beer on it. My Mia noi and Mia Luang are confirming it. The banks and all public services will be shut.

and if the guys with the tanks change sides?
I don't care. Just roll them out and reform the police force.

Once there is reform and laws are enforced, the rest of society will fall into place.

Police are the cause and the solution to today's problems in Thailand.

Don't think there will be vote buying on both sides as the Democrats aren't standing.

Its a right pain, I was supposed to go to BKK for new passport for me & the baby!

Why in Bangkok, could it not be issued here?

First issue passport, AUS for me & Baby, must be done in BKK as far as I understand - Same also for his UK passport

UK passports are no longer issued from the Bangkok Embassy.

An application must be sent to Hong Kong, where it is processed. Passport is issued in UK and then sent by registered mail.

This is now the same for all British embassies in Asia.

If the Democrats don't even run in the election, it will be a proper mess.

The losing political party just can't expect the Thai Army to oust Governments because they didn't win the election.

With ASEAN not far away, Thailand needs political stability, or other countries will not do business here.

I think it may be an excuse for many just to get another day off, but they did put up the attached sign across from Sala Klaang...inevitably they will assemble there all day, causing a traffic jam...couldn't they do this stuff at the tip of Saphan Hin like they used to?

They should get some blue ones then make it a 'red-white-and-blue' theme, suitable for asses from Thailand as well as the UK, France and the good old USA...one of the vendors there is selling purses with UK flags on them, btw;

Even the Russians would like those, but the Chinese might feel left out :)
