Legally parked, told to move by the tuk tuk m@#%@...again.

It does look like you are in the Red/White zone, my friend. Your front tire is on a faded red area, and less faded red is visible in the bottom right corner of the photo. Didn't you say red/white is a no parking zone?

There is another thread by giddyup from Yesterday.

Local Traders seem to think they own the road.

It all comes down to the same reason. Most, if not all, Thais think it is all about me. Me, me, me only. Everything for me, nothing for you.

What does it mean when you block off public parking space? That means you scare away potential customer. Well, maybe be not your customers, but the ones of your fellow citizen.

Yes Somchai Greed, that is what you do you selfish pr#ck! And when they play the national anthem at 0800 and 1800 you feel so pride being a part of this people.

Side note 1: I moved away from thoses places long time ago and avoid such as the pestilence.

Side note 2: If every vendor insists the public parking space in front of his/her shop belongs exclusively to him/her, that would mean a shopper has to finish his deal, get in the car, out of the parking space, drive 20m, park again etc. etc.

Well I guess this is normal almost everywhere in Thailand. I have been told many times by Motorcycle taxi drivers. The problem is if you argue with them you may land in hospital and no one would even bother why.

The Kamala government decided to do something about the parking problem on the beach road last year. They erected signs and no parking zones. First, the sign guys came, and put up signs saying, odd days park on this side, even days the other. The next day someone came and outlined parking spaces in white. It really looked nice. The next day someone came by, took down the parking signs and painted a red and white no parking zone on the sidewalk. The next day some more guys came and blacked out the parking space outlines. Emoji_1F603.png Now it's back to normal. Park anywhere.

I expect we long stay people have all experienced this many times. I just don't take my car out where I know I won't be able to park. Can't remember the last time I dined out in Karon or Kata. I only go to places where I know I can park.

I only park in places that are not Phuket.

Red is no parking, I noticed on you pic you were in a red zone the paint had just faded, Yellow /white is loading and red/white is no parking. No paint is parking unless there is a sign.

OK I went back and looked at the pic. The front wheel of the bike looks as if it is actually against a yellow coloured kerb stone and the next kerb stone is (faded) red. Upon looking at this I would think the "yellow zone" is in reality the other side of the yellow parking line on the actual road (where the dreaded tuk tuks are). It just happened that the kerb stone was completely painted and protruded beyond the actual parking zone. IMO you were illegally parked. However in saying this, the tuk tuks have no right to commandeer the parking area for their sole use and (legally, if that means anything) you would have been within your rights to park on the other side of the yellow line for a short time. Yellow zones are for loading / unloading not parking tuk tuks in all day waiting (hoping) for a passenger .....

However pushing a bike with 2 flat tyres is no fun for any distance.......

Very witty. You must be the life of parties.

Did you consider for one moment why nobody else was parked there ? Could it be possible that it is a no parking zone ? Could it be that the Taxi driver was just telling him not to park in a no parking zone rather than he being a Mafia bully.

No parking zones have to be marked with a sign or a red curb. He was telling me move from a legal parking spot claimed by the tuk tuks to a no parking zone.

But the point we are all missing is why do they get their own spaces at all? And why are they allowed to use vandalism, threats and violence to keep anyone else from using them? Where else in the modern world is this allowed to happen?

Admittedly I was in Isan but had a dinner place that was serving on the walkway across from his property tell me I could not park there. I want to the owner of the place across the soy I was going to for BBQ. I told him the problem and his answer was "its the Kings Road no problem". I went out and told the guy that was telling me to move that it was the "Kings Road" and no problem. Have been going to the same place for over 12 years and also a couple of years after this incident have not had any problems. Might be that I live in a better part of Thailand called Isan with all of these "bad" red shirts but no problems up here.

Yes, my front tire was on the border with the red curb.

I was in Bangkok a couple of years ago.....parked in a legal spot was told to move, I did...I circled the block came back around and stopped along side these scum took out my 10 meter tow strap and run threw the wheels of 4 of their tuks.....lets just say I moved them with my D-Max about 2 blocks before I stopped got out and unhooked my strap and never returned.

You could always handle it the Thai way. Come back with 20 mates and kick the s..t out of them. If the cops come claim it was self defence and loss of face. Maybe get a 500 baht fine.

Where else can you go to get that much entertainment for only 500b?

Are you saying you towed four tuk-tuks 2 blocks through BKK with your brand new D-Max (I assume - only released in LoS in 2003?)?

If they were the BKK type of tuk-tuk they would surely have been dragged along on their sides?

Did you manage to go 2 blocks without stopping? In BKK? Did the tuk-tuk guys not notice you doing this?

Don't want to be rude Thaiready, but seems rather implausible to me.

Just saying. Don't mind being proved wrong or corrected.

On a slightly different note.... whats the make and model of your motorbike? Strange colour scheme has thrown me off. Not a CRF methinks. wai.gif

Thais ignore driving rules and regulations. This is easy, because most Police know less about Thai law than the average tourist. Signs disallowing parking on Even / Odd days are ignored nby everyone.

So why is the police checking every morning for bikes parked on the wrong side of the street and locking them with chains?

In some places like in Kata the police are very vigilant about this. Many other places around Phuket they seem not to be.

I like to eat and drink at the Mermaid nice place to sit and watch these tuk tuk thugs in action....

When I have motor bike i can park on side at the hotel parking but if in car can not go to Mermaid as tuk tuk have all the parking in front ..

wonder how much buissness the Mermaid lost because of no parking available?

who gives these tuk tuks the right to use all this prime parking space?

They really do hog all the car parking in front of the Mermaid and are a traffic hazard as well with all there U turns and running accross the road to hassle people walking on the side walk clearly not wanting a taxi but still get the "Taxi Taxi" and the dirty look when they decline,

Most Thai doesn't care a sh#t about others and that includes also Thais. See your post.

That must be the worst place of the island for polite behaviour of tuktuk drivers.

I would say they are a close second to the guys at the top of Bangla rd. I have mentioned here before the beat down I saw two tourists get from 20+ of these thugs. They just kept coming out of the woodwork to get a sucker punch or kick in on the cowering tourists. I had heard the rumors that fleets of these tuk tuks are owned by the police and that many of the drivers are people arrested for major offenses but given a choice by the police to drive a tuk tuk for them or go to prison. The more of these guys I encounter the more I think that may be true. Of course I have met a few seemingly nice ones.

I wish. Actually not a bad guess. They look similar. I do believe they share some DNA.

Never noticed them.

Patak rd. through Kata/Karon has a few motorcycle taxi ranks, but very few. They are not allowed along the beach roads.

Nor me, and I travel up and down Patak Road every day. Are you sure, Joe?

One set up near Karma Lounge in Karon a couple of years back. Closed a day later!

Yes. For example there is one at the 7-11 at the top of Kata New Rd opposite the fish market. All the drivers sit at the Dragons Layer bar when the bar is closed in the daytime. I am certain there are others but not certain where. I will pay more attention when I ride through there in about an hour.

Have you found any motorcycle taxis in Karon or Kata yet, Joe?
