We own a Thai registered car and would like to drive into Malaysia for a short holiday. Can anyone please tell us what is the procedure. Have heard that it's a lot of trouble but nobody seems to be able to tell me exactly what you need to do and how to do it. I'd really like to give it a go. Any help or advise would be greatly appreicated. Hope to be leaving in about 5-7 days time. Irene.

I know that you need to purchase compulsory insurance for Malaysia at the border and that you need to display your registration number (i.e. license plate) in English on your vehicle. Apart from that, I don't remember all of the requirements. Motor Vehicle Dept. in Hat Yai or the Malaysian consulate in Songkhla could provide exact details. Don't expect that any such offices away from the border area would really be in the loop as to the requirements.

No problem at all! The 4 times I've done it, I just go straight to the border at Sadao go through the Thai and Malaysian checkpoints and stop at the little row of shops on the right hand side. There's an office there that gets a translation of your registration done for you and he'll organize your insurance carnet. Was told that it was slightly cheaper to get the translation done in Hatyai but what's the point of making a detour to save what ends up being very little. I've never had an English version of the Thai plate and never had any trouble. There is a police checkpoint a few miles south of the border and 3 times out of the 4 I've been waved through. The furtherest I've driven myself has been KL although I have been by road to Singapore before. Having said that last time I went down was about a year and a half ago. Nice roads and scenery there too.

Try heading south of Kota Bahru to Kuala Besut and, catch a speed boat to the Perhentian Islands. We went last month and they were spectacular. No roads or ATM's just relaxation.

If thats what you're into you're more than welcome to PM for a little more info, if you don't already know..... :o

Irene, would u please be so kind and share ur experiences after coming back ? I wanna do the BKK - KUL - SIN trip with my car later this year...... and yes, the highways in Malaysia are in such a wonderful condition (though tolls are pricey) and the scenery is awesome...

Firefan, there was a topic about Cambodia recently, and from what I remember, a person living near Aranyaprathet said, that NONE of the cars going behind Cambodian border EVER made it back to Thailand.... and sometimes even the drivers disappeared.... use the SEARCH engine to find out about those "lovely" experiences.....

Yes, there is no problem at all. Do check what kind of driving licence you have. I understand a Thai diriving licence is valid in Malaysia and vice-versa as we are all in the Asean family assuming the licence of one Asean country can be used in the other 9. Or perhaps I am wrong? If you have an international one, that's shoul dbe fine.
