April 8, 200323 yr I am in need of a new camera and prices in Thailand are nearly twice the US prices. I am considering posting one in the mail. Does anyone know what the import duty is likely to be.
April 9, 200323 yr If it is sent in anonumously...plain packing and such...it just might escape the notice of the postal/customs authorities. Many of my Amazon shipments have slipped through unnoticed...but others have been flagged (usually when I order multiple CD or DVDs and the package is large) and the duty is comes out to like 100% of the stated retail value of the shipment. I don't know the rate for electronic goods..suffice it to say it could be about the same. The Thai revenue or customs departments may have the rates posted on their websites...just look in Google. The other alternative is to buy it on a visa run to MAY or Sing. Duties on electronics there are very low and the selection is much better than LOS or have a friend bring one over on their next trip.

April 9, 200323 yr Having visited the main inbound post office sorting depot in Bangkok I can assure that almost all packages and parcels are opened and checked, albeit very carefylly. One reason will no doubt a drugs chech. I was importing a supply of medical equipment for personal use and was charged. However to give the post office/customs chief officer all credit, a face to face chat solved the problem once he realised that I needed the items for day to day living. The problem no longer exists thanks to the good offices of the Thai customs. Now bringing in electronic items as personal airfreight is a totallt different matter. Even old second hand equipment can attract a hefty tax, the rate seems to vairy.
