Im not a 'burger freak' but once a month i drop the missus of at work and head for a breakfast or once every few months she wants a Big Mac .. but im always dissapointed by the whole process.

25 years ago, I was working my way through college in the UK, pulling a few shifts in KFC or McD's. There were strict rules regarding temperature of food, shelf life and the way the food was prepared. The words, 'QC inspection' or 'mystery shopper' sent the whole crew to panic stations.

On the whole, McD's aint half bad, there is never a shortage of staff to clean the tables or the floor, they are all clean and presentable, kinda do their best to speak a bit of English, there are posts praising McD service on TV, im just a little confused about a 'global franchise' angle .. I thought the idea, putting the regional menu aside, that customer service policy should be the same throughout the world.

In the UK, I never get upset but numerous times i have been given 2 burgers because i waited for longer than expected, a totally pointless exercise as i didnt want the other burger and handed it back. Indonesia, it became a running joke, where you would automatically get two french fries. While westerners waited to for the oil to heat, the locals preferred rice.

Back in the day, at times, the supervisor would get repremanded as trays of food would be binned due to over-cooking, or underestimating the rush at closing times of the local boozer.

For instance, today, the coffee machine was out-of-order and the staff attempted to charge a higher meal price because i had to take a replacement ice coffee .. surely the meal price is set, irrelevant of their mechanical breakdown. While im standing firm on the point at the counter, im made to look like the 'bad farang'.

Why am i constantly palmed off with stone cold fries when they they must have been sitting there for way over the shelf life ? When i return them to the counter im made to feel like a <deleted> "Oh my god, the problem farang doesnt want cold soggy french fried, whats the matter with the guy ? he's got a bad attitude" or sent away with fries and drink waiting a further 15 minutes for a burger to arrive, as someone forgot, without so much as a sorry.

Has anyone here been a McD's or KFC manager and can explain ? Is Thailand exempt from franchise standards due to 'Thainess' or something ?? or am i confused, there are no global standards and Thailand makes their own ( Which is probably the answer ).

Never had these issues… perhaps your appearance makes people not really care about you.

The same way a beautiful girl will always be given first class treatment by all guys while a fat, ugly girl will get the door slammed in her face. No different.

Think yourself lucky you have one to visit !

I hear ya! for years we only had one and the insurgents blew it up twice.

Yeah, I would agree .. I'm not in Bangkok, and dont have cause to complain when there .. must be a southern thing ..

Which brings the question, if you guys get decent service, then in the provinces we get palmed off with crap. So there isnt even any customer service standards of the biggest franchise in the world within Thailand ( doh, nothing new there a'la Honda, LG, Apple, etc, etc ) .. Yeah, I must be insane ..

Mickey D's has 34,000 stores worldwide serving 68 million customers in 119 countries daily. Link

Naw, it's cultural. Do you really expect rural Thais to get it? There is one on the Champs Elysees in Paris (as well as a Burger King) and everything was perfect. Different culture. (And yes, after eating too much of the crap food that the French are famous for, I was delighted to see a Burger King.)
