Process for renting out your own car

Featured Replies

This may have been covered previously but I didn't come across anything in my search of previous topics.

I'm considering either selling or renting out my Honda CRV 2.0E 2012 model.

In the case of renting, I'm interested in getting feedback on the best way to do this:

  1. Is there a standard rental contract in Thai and English that can be used for this purpose.
  2. Is there a specific type of car insurance for this? We have a standard insurance package which from what I understand does not specifically include / cover for rental purposes
  3. Has anybody had a GPS locator installed in their vehicle and can provide feedback / recommendations?

Thanks

In Thailand, I would worry about renting to people you don't know, especially people from other countries as well as Thai with fake ID card.

However, a hidden GPS locator could help to overcome some of the issues. Of course, you must not talk about it.

There was an incident, someone from Arab emirates or something rents a car, parks in Swampy airport and leaves country. After 2 years, rental company contacted by Swampy airport and asks 150-200k parking fees to deliver car. You can't expect anyone to follow rules or law where law enforcement virtually doesn't exist (TIT)

If you owned a gun would you rent it out ?

No, because then you would be liable for whatever was done with that gun. Do you think that if someone kills a child in Thailand, using your car and then leaving the scene of the accident , the police will not come looking for you.

Sorry, but this is a dumb idea from the get go (IMHO)

Of course all the above scare mongering would be exempted under the properly drawn up, signed rental agreement, just like the big (and small) car rental cos have. Your biggest obstacle will be insurance.

However, personally wouldn't rent a petrol engined vehicle.

Wouldn't renting out your vehicle be classed as work here (you are providing a service for money)?

If so this could be a dangerous route to take IMHO.

My Thai wife rents out motorcycles .She has to tell the Insurance Co ,and they change the code on

the Insurance form .This is just minimum Insurance required by law .For a car you would need extra

Insurane not available for bike rental .

And exactly how are you going to enforce a signed rental agreement with tourists ? Hold their passports hostage like the Thais do ? BTW. The truth is not scare mongering

Deposit, either cash or via credit card. And of course good insurance, so major expenses are covered.

Deposit will not cover for stolen car or a big accident without a thai drivers license in tourist pocket. This is not your homecountry. Law is not enforced here.

That is not what the deposit is meant for or what it should be used for. For that you need insurance, as mentioned.
