Problem with Paypal is the exchange rate they give sucks bigtime !

My advice would be to send to bangkok bank in new york, they pass it to your bangkok bank account in Thailand, much better, easier and good rate.

Yes it's easy peasy, as long as you don't get involved with any commercial transactions PP might think are shady, they are famous for locking up accounts and you lose all the money.

Not bank accounts, just the PayPal account, keep that balance low and you don't have to worry.

You can't have one PayPal account tied to bank accounts in both countries, set up two separate ones associated with different emails.

You can use a regular credit card, or one of the Internet-banking "virtual" ones like Kasikorn offers to fund from one PP account to the other.

However since they charge a percentage, regular SWIFT transfers are cheaper once you get up into large amounts, PP is best for small regular payments.

I live in the US. I joined Paypal to buy something online. Right after I joined my account was charged over 100 uros

Yes, wiring via US internal ACH transfer to your (or anybody's) Thai Bangkok Bank account through their NY branch is cheaper than SWIFT.

Sorry, I hit the wrong button. After the being charged uros for something I didn't buy, someone hacked my account & tried to transfer money from my account. Thank god I did not have that much money in my account. PayPal holds on to your money until their investigation is completed. The ONLY 2 times my account has been hacked was through PayPal. For 11 years I lived on Orcas Island off the Washington State coast and have ordered a lot online w/no problems. I killed my PayPal account.

My problem is that we usually send small amounts per month 3-5,000 bht to pay out monthly bills and some times some extra spending money for the in-laws . We don;t want to keep large amounts in a bank account that other people have access to for obvious reasons.I am looking in to the ACH option, but in the mean time I think I will try a small transaction with PayPal to see how it works out

Thank you all for your replies

I hope Orcasmarx has disputed the charge in his PayPall account , and is able to resolve it equitable

You don't nedd to use the Paypal exchange rate, you have choice of using your credit cards exchange rate.

Yes PayPal is IMO perfect for that scenario, just deposit what you want into PP as you go, don't leave big balances there.

Setting up the links to the bank accounts is a lot easier when you're actually in the country concerned. Hope the in-laws have a clue and can follow directions, or might need to wait until you're back for a visit.

Try kapook If you are sending from the UK, they are in Barclays Banks. They charge 1 baht less than you would get in Thailand per pound. and £2 every hundred. The receiver can get 1 day later.

Don't use these greedy Paypal guys. Stopped using them after they charged me 120$ in transaction costs last time.

They take 4 % for receiving money (you cannot send money to yourself as you can only have one account at a time, and only in one country)

plus another 2.5 % for currency conversion.

What a ripoff, even Western Union is cheaper when sending money to bank accounts.

I just started using XE with success. Good exchange rate that you lock in when you exchange...and can debit your bank account directly without using a debit card number (good if you lose your atm card/or it expires)

It was just over 20 dollars (USD) to convert to Thai Baht and wire to a Bank Account in Thailand.

It takes 10 to 14 days.....so I am preparing in advance.

Can be to a different account owner's name here....(for instance your wife or girl).

Cut my atm fees in half.

As I posted it's easy to have multiple accounts, one for each country, just different email addresses.

And you can fund from any CC, including virtual ones that pull from your tied account.

Yes it doesn't make sense for large amounts, but for weekly spending money, topping up phone cards etc to teeraks very easy and economical.

Other services I haven't tried may well be better, but WU certainly isn't good for under a few thousand baht.
