It is never good to be in an overstay situation. It happens and as such you are able to usually pay the fee without incident. However if you are caught immigration or a knowledgeable law Enforcement Officer and asked for your Passport and found to be in an overstay situation you will be detained. It is the risk you take overstaying.

Since you were given 7 days to leave the country they will be less than friendly when you leave with an overstay. They will still allow you to pay the fine and leave though.

It would be better to do a border run that doing an overstay.

If you got a 7 day extension, it sounds like you didn't have a tourist visa to start with.

(An assumption was made to reach that conclusion.)

In general, don't overstay just for convenience or to save a little money.

It's a last resort for the desperate.

In practice most of the time you'll be fine, but if you happen to be the unlucky one this week going to jail and being deported are well worth not taking chances.

As ubonjoe correctly states you did NOT get an extension.

You were in fact given 7 extra days to leave the country.

Overstaying on that is like spitting in their face.

They will not be happy with you.

You MAY still get away with it ..... but you are on very thin ice by seemingly insulying them by doing that.

Good luck, you may need it.

Do it right do a border run, and get the correct visa before coming to Thailand, all the people that sail close to the wind, make it more difficult for the genuine visitor

What does your passport stamp say? Stamped "admitted until"?
