Thinking of buying an Internet Radio, but does anyone have experience of using one in Thailand. Yes, I know I can listen to the good old BBC on my Laptop, but am hoping that the theory of how an Internet Radio works......ie, as far as I understand it, as long as you are within range of your own modem you can find most of the Worlds Radio Stations and listen live anywhere in your home?

Any practical advice much appreciated, eg, do they in fact work well and hold a particular channel long enough to listen to an entire programme of whatever type, etc etc.......thanks a lot!

Personally, I'd spend the money on a decent set of speakers for the laptop and use Screamer Radio instead of buying an internet radio. Screamer Radio is a very small program but with a ton of stations nicely organised by genre, network or country.

My parents bought an internet radio for the kitchen but now regret their purchase. It was replaced by an old laptop and a pair of speakers.

Another couple of decent radio players for Windows are TuneIn Radio and Radio Tuna. Both free and highly rated.

Just get an Android smart phone and run whatever internet radio app you want (Tunein and Stitcher for me) including away from a wifi signal using the phone network. Bluetooth stream it to whatever speakers you got or the car on the road. Some apps (like Stitcher etc) let you download first to saving on phone network data roaming costs.

I've seen very few internet radios in Thailand and I've never seen a good one. You do find quite a good selection in farangland on Amazon etc.

These days I think the combination of Android phone/tablet and some decent Bluetooth or even cabled speakers is the way to go. Many people have a smartphone or tablet device these days and there are loads of free apps available for Android that will play live streamed radio and also podcasts and iplayer content from the BBC etc. And you can get a good external powered speaker system for less than the cost of a good internet radio.

Similar apps are probably available for Apple devices also, not that I would ever have one.

Another good option for the well-heeled is Sonos. I have a Play5 (soon to be 2 Play5s) and it is great. But they dont give them away anywhere and they are not widely available in Thailand at all. I paid "only" GBP300 for my latest Play5 thanks to an online pricing glitch and was delighted to have got some GBP60 off the list price.

Antenna's another good one I've used in the past.
