Bangkok populace, protesters donate almost Bt20 million for farmers

BANGKOK, Feb 11 – Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban announced last night that the anti-government movement would seek at least Bt20 million donations from the Bangkok citizenry to relieve the plight of farmers who are demonstrating in the capital.

Farmers from several rice-planting provinces are camping out in front of the Commerce Ministry to demand payment for the grain they have sold to the state under the rice pledging scheme.

Mr Suthep said the two-day march on Silom and Sukhumvit roads, organised by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), should generate almost Bt20 million.

The PDRC collected Bt9.2 million from donors during the nine-hour walk on Silom Road on the weekend.

“We got 19 bags of donated cash from people during the march from Ekamai to Phetchburi Road, Thonglor and Sukhumvit Road which lasted eight hours. We’ll do our best to get Bt20 million for farmers,” he said.

He said farmers did not believe the government’s claim that 18 million tonnes of rice are in the state stockpiles and doubted if the government would be able to seek loans to pay farmers.

Mr Suthep said the PDRC will also give financial assistance to six city administration employees who were injured in a bombing on Ratchdamnoen Avenue yesterday.

Regarding the arrest of Sonthiyan Chuenruthainaitham, a top protest leader named in an arrest warrant, at a Lat Phrao shopping complex yesterday, Mr Suthep said a lawyer was assigned to visit him.

Mr Sonthiyan’s arrest would not deter other key leaders from the protest, he said. (MCOT online news)

So, how many BILLIONS did the gov owe the farmers??

20 million may hardly covers their daily expenses of being there such as transport and food.

He's essentially paying them to continue the protests.

"How many thousands did they owe you? Oh, here's 20 bt, hope it helps..."

Is there any audit of where the money is really going? Otherwise, I would be very doubt claims that the money actually went to Thai Rice Farmers.

Consent. Thailand needs a review/strong neutral audit of where the 800.000.000.000 Baht from the rice scheme are really went!

Two farmers have already committed suicide out of desperation.

No, 20 million is a drop in the ocean, but it can save some lives and give some urgent assistance to some of the farmers.

That is the contrast with the other side that they can offer nothing else than empty words of sorrow and crocodile tears.

Thats nice of them.

If they spread it around the population of Isaan and the North thats about 50 satang per person.

Undying gratitude long way off. Maybe some land donations would be in order, but looks like somebody else gets the land.

I imagine you two have contributed much more to the plight of those whose lives have been wrecked by the party you seem to support rolleyes.gif . 20 million baht will give 20 000 farmers a 1000 baht each, that will put food in their children's belly's for a week. Why not find something good to do yourselves instead of sitting on here bitching and moaning.

To put it in perspective, your hero Thaksin could pay the Farmers immediately with just a fraction of the money he has scammed of Thailand in the last 2 years, but will he...No! Why not bitch and moan about him.

Have they actually donated Bt 20 million OR are they seeking Bt 20 million to give to farmers, big difference between seeking and donating.

The truth of the matter is that Suthep is trying to help.

Yingluck and Thaksin have done sweet Fanny Adams in comparison.

That is what they will be judged on

Should people be more worried about 800 billion baht of taxpayers' money from the rice scheme or 10 million baht in donations from the people of Bangkok?

Remind me again what your comic messiah, his clone sister and her band of merry thieves have done to try and resolve this issue ?

hang on minute they caused this in the first place...

To me, it is no more than just Grandstanding and Attention Seeking to find relevance in his floundering campaign against the government. There are many issues that need to be addressed. Unfortunately those issues - including the rice farmers problems cannot be solved with Mr. Suthep and his protesters on the street. Those problems cannot be solved when the elections in the southern provinces have been blocked by no less than Mr. Suthep himself. So Farmers have only Mr. Suthep to thank for - for the delay in the resolution of their problem....

Strange how suddenly Mr Suthep is so worried about the farmers when just a few weeks ago, he and his associates 'on the stage' were screaming that there had to be electoral reform "because the stupid, uneducated rice farmers" continued to vote for Thaksin parties at the expense of the 'Bangkok, educated, middle-classes'.

Edited by PREM-R

I wonder if any of the money is going to be pocketed before it gets to the farmers. Someone need to follow the money trail.

Are you sure he said that? Link pls.

Try reading a bit more. He has made those comments, and similar ones, quite a few time.

Come on, you know it's off topic to remark on Thaksin's wealth or the US$1.5 billion which his sister's government returned to him as he has stated himself.

the sign of decent people is helping others when they are down, doesnt matter if you think they did the wrong thing voting for these idiots but they need help and those able to are doing just that. Its not the amount but the actual fact that they are trying to help them, those in here trying to make it out as bullsh*t are typical lowlifes not capable of generousity themselves or even able to understand it, like ptp/reds they only think "whats in it for me" which is the red catch cry. This just shows that when needed the people of Thailand can work together apart from the ptp/red/thaksin lovers as they are only interested in themselves, not the country as a whole yert they try to claim they are, they are simply beneath contempt.

I have NO problem with people helping the farmers, as they are in desperate need of it, and they deserve help. My problem is not the help, however much it may be, by Suthep, but his MOTIVES for it. For him it's not seriously about helping the farmers, who he considers 2nd class citizens, but only a publicity stunt to garner attention and support for HIM,. This has zero to do with any real caring motives for the farmer.

Tell us again what Yingluck, Thaksin and all your other heroes have done so far, except robbing and cheating them?

I wonder if any of the money is going to be pocketed before it gets to the farmers. Someone need to follow the money trail.

Most of the money has been pocketed before it got to the farmers, that is precisely why they are now in Bangkok protesting and talking to Suthep and also why the majority of them are from areas where the PTP has less sway and thus less interest in them. Isaan farmers are not heavily represented....yet

As for following the money trail, as soon as this lot are out, there will be a forensic audit and then we'll see the magnitude of Thaksin's scam.

With regard to Suthep's marching and collecting money, I'm sure there are many backers making sure the money gets to the fund set up to assist these farmers.

Try to focus on the main problem, that is the PTP rice scam and the massive financial losses. Let Suthep and the citizenry of Bangkok do their thing to try and help.

If PTP were in Suthep's shoes they'd be doing the same thing. It's called tactics and strategy.

In my opinion, cheers

Wrong .. they have only Yingluck and this government to blame due to the fact that Yingluck dissolved Parliament without making provisions for payment .. It was her responsibility as PM and Head of the Rice pledging committee ..

I don't know where the idea came from the money is going directly to the farmers?

It is not going to the farmers. It is going towards legal representation so the farmers can bring their plight to the courts.

Isn't this one of the things they are protesting about, buying support?

Isn't this one of the things they are protesting about, buying support?

Yeah, but it only applies if the "other guy" does it. cheesy.gif
