Excellent. Execute the clear-out on a Buddhist holy day. There are no coincidences.----- As you say A strange day to do this??

If they clear the protesters today, what is to stop them coming back in greater numbers tomorrow, and Sunday, and Monday,....................?

Are we going to see mass arrests and detentions? How will Thaksin's toady Surapong explain that to the world?

Wait, I've worked it out! The BIB could blockade those sites to stop protesters from re-entering. That'll show them.

Laziness? Apathy?

Protest sites are empty for most of the day.

Yellow shirts lost. Deal with it.

The first stage of the war on the shutdown of Bangkok has begun.

Yes, you reds do like your violence, don't you?

Seems a rather odd statement to make given the different approaches for clearing the city centre in 2010 and now.The former if you recall involved the army shooting innocent victims. The latter involves internationally praised patience and restraint.

just take away all aspects of comfort and the protest will die out

lock toilets

dismantle the big karaoke stage during the day when its empty

stop people making shops in the protest areas by not letting them in with their stock

confiscate tents and sleeping bags during the day so there is no place to sleep except outside on concrete

deny access to food and drink vendors so they will have nothing to eat or drink by blocking the roads inwards

see how long it lasts when peolpe are cold ,tired ,sore and hungry and thirsty ......they will leave one by one without

the police having to use violence on them

The police claimed they would only be armed with batons and shields but you can clearly see on TV that many have pistols and some are carrying automatic weapons.

Doesn't bode well.

They have the right to defend themselves should there be live fire.

I anticipate that should the decision be made to carry out the removal of the illegal squatter camps. it will be done quickly and with a minimum of violence at several of the sites. The squatters/protestors are few in number at several sites, which will make it easier to swarm them and discourage those who wish to engage in violence. If there is bloodshed it will come courtesy of the squatters.

About time.

Hopefully it will go off smoothly without any problems.

You have really got no understanding of the situation here in Thailand. I read your posts on a daily basis, and I see the majority of posters criticise and despise you, and yet you still continue to post utter twaddle. Have you got any experience in life whatsoever? How on earth do you think an open confrontation with the police v peaceful protesters exercising their democratic right to demonstrate will go off smoothly and without any problems? Your continual aggravating posts should be reserved for the playground at kindergarten. Juvenile at best. How old are you?

I believe all the person was saying is that he "HOPES" it goes smoothly. Hoping that there is no violence or injuries is hardly acting like a Juvenile but would be more the thoughts of a responsible adult.

Maybe we read the post of Thailand differently.

The police claimed they would only be armed with batons and shields but you can clearly see on TV that many have pistols and some are carrying automatic weapons.

Strange claim indeed since every Thai policeman I have ever seen carries a firearm

They're just clearing those sites that will get in the way of tonight's processions. coffee1.gif

I don't think Jesus would have approved of gassing protestors

It is a shame they weren't as active in 2010.

What an inane comment. Abhisit and Suthep ordered the army in who declared live fire zones, shot scores of people dead and drove into the rally sites with tanks. What are the police supposed to do in such a situation?

The cleaning of the yellow thugs is underway... Very good news.

And since there are just 50 or so protesters left, no big deal :)

For goodness sake, you guys never get tired of repeating a proven lie that the army was shooting innocent victims. Grow up. Educate yourself on the topic of 2010. No one was innocent there.

Descent into Chaos

Thailand’s 2010 Red Shirt Protests and the Government Crackdown
May 3, 2011

This report provides the most detailed account yet of violence and human rights abuses by both sides during and after massive protests in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand in 2010. The report is based on 94 interviews with victims, witnesses, protesters, academics, journalists, lawyers, human rights defenders, parliament members, government officials, security personnel, police, and those who directly took part in various stages of the violence from both the government and the protester sides. It documents deadly attacks by government security forces on protesters in key incidents and details abuses by armed elements, known as “Black Shirts,” associated with the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). The report also explains the background to the political crisis that led to the protests and continues to the present.

Police start reclaim areas from Democracy Monument from protesters

BANGKOK: -- Police in full gear on Saturday started reclaiming areas near the Victory Monument through Makawan Rangsan Bridge which is used as rally site of anti-government protesters, Nation Channel reported.

They removed sacks of sands set up as barriers near the bridge.

However the attempt faced no resistance from the protesters whose numbers are small. The areas were controlled by Student and People Network for Thailand’s Reform and Dharma Army.

Nice to chat with again Jayboy.

I'm not taking sides, and don't condone violence from either side, however, given the comment by a strong red supporter, and the track record of violence from past red shirt events, it seems appropriate to mention that he is condoning and seemingly wishing not only for violence, but even a war..... that's my point.

From what I know about you and your years of previous posts, I'm sure you also are not wishing for a war!

These orders coming from the international headquarters of CMPO in Myanmar

Wherever they come from.. How long do you allow a failed coup attempt, with just a few 100 people still active, to close off the capital city of a country.

At some point real life has to reboot and start again. If the government wasnt forced into caretaker mode they could get on with the business of governing the country.

Police launch 'Operation Valentine' to clear Rajdamnoen rally site
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Police Friday launched the Operation Valentine to "reclaim public space" from protesters led by the Students and People Network for Thailand's Reform Friday morning.

Dozens of companies of policemen gathered at the Royal Plaza at 7 am before they headed to the Misakawan Intersection to begin the operation.

At 8:26 am, police demolished the first line of barriers of the protesters and then removed their sandbag lines.

At 8:29 am, police announced that they needed to clear the road and told protesters not to resist the operation. Armed with shields, the formed lines and moved forward to the protesters.

They started demolishing tents of the protesters on the Rajdamnoen Road on the Makkhawan Bridge at 8:48 am.

No violence and clash happened because the STR had moved its protesters from the area, leaving behind only tents and bunkers.

True.

Abhisit 2010

"We can't allow a situation where people set up armed groups and overthrow the government because they don't agree with it... We cannot retreat because what we're doing is for the good of the majority of the people."

Earlier in the day, troops designated areas of the Thai capital as "live firing zones" in a warning to protesters.

I agree that this government wants to "get on with the business", but don't think the business they have in mind is "running the country".

they have been training for months to do this. Let's hope they do it right and the protesters don't do something stupid. No shooting no violence just pick up your tents and move to the park.

Seems a rather odd statement to make given the different approaches for clearing the city centre in 2010 and now.The former if you recall involved the army shooting innocent victims. The latter involves internationally praised patience and restraint.

In 2010 before a single bullet was fired the peaceful protestors threatened to blow up LPG truck, grenade attacked at Thai banks, attacked Thai charity with grenades, stormed parliament, attacked NPP and TPI buildings with M16 and grenades, stormed police hospital, stormed TV station, bomb attacks on electricity pylons, 2 police taken hostage, destroy CCTV cameras, dumped tyres on sky train tracks and beating soldiers to within an inch of their lives. Abhisit should have got a Nobel Peace Prize for showing restraint. After all this he gave the protesters 48 hours to clear or the soldiers would come in. 48 hours latter the soldiers came in. No back tracking. No changing his mind. A resolute leader were the people knew where they stood.

The latter is Chalerm stating every few days for weeks now we will come in and break the protests up yet he never does. Telling them he will come in in disguise and arrest Suthep. Never did. Have an emergency decree that states no more than 5 people can gather yet they have and continue to. More buildings have been taken over during the decree than before it. The CMPO (centre for maintaining peace and order) telling the EC they are responsible for maintaining peace and order. The latter reminds me of how the PTP managed the floods in 2011. With absolute incompetence. Reminds me of how they ran the rice scheme. With absolute incompetence.

Going by the PTP track record I will let you behead me if the streets of Bangkok are empty of protestors tomorrow night. That is how incompetent I think the PTP are at leading. Inappropriate to say I would let you behead me? Apparently it is OK because the PTP Deputy PM, Labour Minister, Head of CMPO said it too.

Your all garbage if you disagree. Is that appropriate? Apparently it is because another Deputy PM said it. So don't tell me I am talking inappropriately because if you do then you would not support a party that thinks those comments are acceptable.

TNN is on air on True but not with live coverage from BKK. Can't find any showing of the current situation and operations on any mainstream channels which doesn't really surprise me.

this comes to mind on this special day...
