The police claimed they would only be armed with batons and shields but you can clearly see on TV that many have pistols and some are carrying automatic weapons.

Doesn't bode well.

They have the right to defend themselves should there be live fire.

I anticipate that should the decision be made to carry out the removal of the illegal squatter camps. it will be done quickly and with a minimum of violence at several of the sites. The squatters/protestors are few in number at several sites, which will make it easier to swarm them and discourage those who wish to engage in violence. If there is bloodshed it will come courtesy of the squatters.

Strange claim indeed since every Thai policeman I have ever seen carries a firearm

just take away all aspects of comfort and the protest will die out

lock toilets

dismantle the big karaoke stage during the day when its empty

stop people making shops in the protest areas by not letting them in with their stock

confiscate tents and sleeping bags during the day so there is no place to sleep except outside on concrete

deny access to food and drink vendors so they will have nothing to eat or drink by blocking the roads inwards

see how long it lasts when peolpe are cold ,tired ,sore and hungry and thirsty ......they will leave one by one without

the police having to use violence on them

Jesus, why don't you just gas them <deleted>?

I don't think Jesus would have approved of gassing protestors

Seems a rather odd statement to make given the different approaches for clearing the city centre in 2010 and now.The former if you recall involved the army shooting innocent victims. The latter involves internationally praised patience and restraint.

For goodness sake, you guys never get tired of repeating a proven lie that the army was shooting innocent victims. Grow up. Educate yourself on the topic of 2010. No one was innocent there.

Descent into Chaos

Thailand’s 2010 Red Shirt Protests and the Government Crackdown
May 3, 2011

This report provides the most detailed account yet of violence and human rights abuses by both sides during and after massive protests in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand in 2010. The report is based on 94 interviews with victims, witnesses, protesters, academics, journalists, lawyers, human rights defenders, parliament members, government officials, security personnel, police, and those who directly took part in various stages of the violence from both the government and the protester sides. It documents deadly attacks by government security forces on protesters in key incidents and details abuses by armed elements, known as “Black Shirts,” associated with the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). The report also explains the background to the political crisis that led to the protests and continues to the present.

Police start reclaim areas from Democracy Monument from protesters

BANGKOK: -- Police in full gear on Saturday started reclaiming areas near the Victory Monument through Makawan Rangsan Bridge which is used as rally site of anti-government protesters, Nation Channel reported.

They removed sacks of sands set up as barriers near the bridge.

However the attempt faced no resistance from the protesters whose numbers are small. The areas were controlled by Student and People Network for Thailand’s Reform and Dharma Army.

The first stage of the war on the shutdown of Bangkok has begun.

Yes, you reds do like your violence, don't you?

Seems a rather odd statement to make given the different approaches for clearing the city centre in 2010 and now.The former if you recall involved the army shooting innocent victims. The latter involves internationally praised patience and restraint.

Nice to chat with again Jayboy.

I'm not taking sides, and don't condone violence from either side, however, given the comment by a strong red supporter, and the track record of violence from past red shirt events, it seems appropriate to mention that he is condoning and seemingly wishing not only for violence, but even a war..... that's my point.

From what I know about you and your years of previous posts, I'm sure you also are not wishing for a war!

Police launch 'Operation Valentine' to clear Rajdamnoen rally site
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Police Friday launched the Operation Valentine to "reclaim public space" from protesters led by the Students and People Network for Thailand's Reform Friday morning.

Dozens of companies of policemen gathered at the Royal Plaza at 7 am before they headed to the Misakawan Intersection to begin the operation.

At 8:26 am, police demolished the first line of barriers of the protesters and then removed their sandbag lines.

At 8:29 am, police announced that they needed to clear the road and told protesters not to resist the operation. Armed with shields, the formed lines and moved forward to the protesters.

They started demolishing tents of the protesters on the Rajdamnoen Road on the Makkhawan Bridge at 8:48 am.

No violence and clash happened because the STR had moved its protesters from the area, leaving behind only tents and bunkers.

It is a shame they weren't as active in 2010.

What an inane comment. Abhisit and Suthep ordered the army in who declared live fire zones, shot scores of people dead and drove into the rally sites with tanks. What are the police supposed to do in such a situation?

True.

Abhisit 2010

"We can't allow a situation where people set up armed groups and overthrow the government because they don't agree with it... We cannot retreat because what we're doing is for the good of the majority of the people."

Earlier in the day, troops designated areas of the Thai capital as "live firing zones" in a warning to protesters.

These orders coming from the international headquarters of CMPO in Myanmar

Wherever they come from.. How long do you allow a failed coup attempt, with just a few 100 people still active, to close off the capital city of a country.

At some point real life has to reboot and start again. If the government wasnt forced into caretaker mode they could get on with the business of governing the country.

I agree that this government wants to "get on with the business", but don't think the business they have in mind is "running the country".
