Popular Post nonthaburial
People, I write this from China, even though I have business offices and property in Thailand, and have done for many years. Ok many years meaning from1999. Thailand has a history of being unstable, and foreigners are there as guests, YES guests, you may own property, you may be married to Thais, you may have children, but you have no rights. Please urgently grasp this reality, what rights do you have to keyboard warrior your feelings, of which you possibly have no idea of the backgrounds. Is it just because you are trying to back your wives opinion. You (we) have no rights, you (we) are nobodies ,, these idiot foreigners pictured on stage at protests are brain dead, and have exposed themselves to possible recriminations, well that is if they haven't been deported already. Us westerners are so used to immigrants forming huge parts (rightly or wrongly) of our home countries and having the rights to make comments, that we believe it is there rights, but you cannot sit in judgement in places like Thailand, you are not qualified. There is nothing wrong with keeping up with news items, there is nothing wrong with agreeing or disagreeing with what you read, BUT as a guest you have no rights to involve yourselves. We read on here comments from foreign red and yellow shirt supporters, why bother, you are absolutely the dregs in Thailand according to the locals, why not with your supposed bigger finances than the locals, buy ring side seats and have the best seats to watch this circus unwind. If your Isaan rice farming wife is a Thaksin red shirt supporter and is willing to take back handers to caste her vote so be it, but I would question her morality ?? No I am not casting aspersions on your loved ones. She is Thai and has every right you have non. Sit back, don't embarrass yourselves, don't get high blood pressure, you cannot and will never be a voice in this politics. Remember and understand Thailand has NEVER been colonized, you are seeing years and years of jungle behaviors and you cannot change it Posted in peace for all
cdmtdm
all good things eventually come to an end , imo it will soon be time for a radical change of direction for this country , your comment about never being colonized has nothing to do with todays predicament .... the local region of Myanmar , Thailand ,Laos and Cambodia are all basket cases due to internal issues not foreign issues .....it is all part of developing democracies .... for the first time i see signs from here ( deep in isaan) of the locals being fed up , they want change .... a split is coming and i just hope the loss of life is minimal along with the financial holocaust ....
rickirs
Yes, Thailand was never colonized. Part of this "success" was its 1940 "Treaty between Thailand and Japan Concerning the Continuance of Friendly Relations and the Mutual Respect of Each Other's Territorial Integrity" to become an ally with the Japanese Empire. Under this treaty with Japanese "assistance" Thailand made successful territorial conquests against the French in conjunction with Japan's own fight against the French, Americans, and Chinese. Also under this treaty Thailand allowed Japan to build a railroad network in Thailand using in part American and British POW's. Maybe in the long run it was unfortunate that Thailand was never colonized and, thus, never realized what it took to become a real democratic country. Look around Asia at countries like The Philipines, India, Indoneasia, Malaysia, etc. that were colonized who have since become successful and stable democracies. And while it didn't become a "colony" of America with its defeat in WWII, Japan's dominance by the American victors set it also to become one of the world's strongest economic and democratic nation.
Popular Post cooked
I don't like the somewhat supercilious tone of the Op but I must agree that many posters on TV seem to have a misguided, 'Fox News uninformed' view of Thai politics. I am not an old timer here but I have seen at first hand what the rice pledging scheme has done to farmers in the village where I live. It's not funny. Red shirt supporter? Yellow shirt supporter? As far as I can see, the present problems are far removed from such easy categories. The farmers want their f$%^ing money, that's simple enough to understand, internet is educating people to understand how they are being exploited, and... misuse of lese majeste and internet abuse laws probably prevents me from adding more, not that I am anti royalist. It's not black and white, not commie propaganda versus fascist mobs, unless you make it such in your own mind. The guys are becoming, despite the efforts of the ' elite', more informed, more knowledgeable and less ready to bow down to what is dictated to them and expected. I suspect that many of the comments about Thai politics come from people that don't live here full time, or live in the cess pots of Pattaya, Phuket and Bangkok ( some nice people down there all the same) that have never experienced a single day in a simple rural community.
holeyman1
OP is right, as I've always said.. We have not rights, what we have are purely privileges, nothing more. Online banter may be members' forte but where rights are concerned, both you & I have none. Never had, not now & never will. I thoroughly enjoy reading "keyboard warriors' views & expressions." Sometimes I read them to a point I know they are already furiously banging on the keys : ) Gotta love this forum!! somtam palah
Popular Post moradave
What's wrong with being a guest? I don't think any of us came here expecting to become citizens. I know the Thais will never listen to the rants and raves on this forum, but it at least gives us an outlet to express our western, democratic opinions. And some Thai pundits may read these opinions and, based on what they read, may form some democratic opinions of their own which they may pass on to their fellow Thais. So, keep on posting as long as the law allows you to.
Torrens54
I am in total agreement with the OP, I have been saying for months now, that as a Guest in this country, I will refrain from making direct comments on the current issues. My wife is a very well educated Thai and I leave all commentary on Thai Politics to her. She warned me many years ago, that unlike Australia where I had numerous verbal clashes with Prime Ministers, Premiers and other assorted "Pollies", Union Bosses, Tree-huggers and various Fringe-dwelling Lunatics, I could very well finish up in Prison or being Deported if I air my opinions on what are "Thai Matters." Sure, there are times when I'm tempted to point out some blatant stupidity etc., by someone or other in the political arena but I hold back, not so much because I fear deportation or even being tossed in the Clink, but simply because my Wife, whom I adore has asked me to not get involved and also because, as I have stated here previously, I am a Guest in this Country. Thanks to "nonthaiburial" for taking the trouble to explain the "facts of life in Thailand" to some Ferang who think that anyone in Thai Politics gives "a fig" about what they might have to say on Domestic issues.
Popular Post mike123ca
Why is this in the Farming forum?
kickstart
It has been said a thousand times on TV farangs have no rights in Thailand. like the "alien's" we are, like having to go though the yearly hassle of visa renewal, a pain in the butt. But,if I was not in Thailand I could not farm ,like I am, there is no way way I could buy / rent land in the uk and farm , so I will put up with all the BS Including, Thai politics. I have been with my Thai wife for some years now , and can trust her. The worse thing is,I can not see a change in anything in Thailand for a long time.
