16 injured in blast near anti-govt protest in Bangkok

Featured Replies

As my wife and I were coming home about 6 pm, we were hearing on the street about the Big C Rajadamri bombing (or whatever it was).

Nothing official, but the Thais on the street seemed to be talking about one or two people having been killed, and the victims including some kind of food sellers, as opposed to protesters.

And I'll repeat. None of that is official. But that was what Thai folks in our neighborhood were talking about tonight.

Following yesterday's horrific occurrence in Trat, today's incident outside a Big C in Bangkok is yet another clear indication of a terrorist attack, although this time, independent of a PDRC protest site. This occurred outside a shopping centre, and so shoppers would unquestionably be the victims, including inevitably families and children. That's the nature of a terrorist attack. Due to the indiscriminate nature of the attack, it creates terror. Today's attack, and most certainly yesterday's - which was undoubtedly a crime against humanity - show a new ruthless force afoot. The tactics have changed, as has the sheer brutal nature of them. A blast naturally suggests a bomb, and one that was clearly meant to detonate outside a shopping centre. The very fact that these characteristics are new, points to a new element, and one that is not only dangerously armed, but also completely devoid of conscience.

It is Yingluck's duty as prime minister to address the nation through television - today - to denounce both these attacks, and show her solidarity with the Thai men and women and children who have been killed or injured. Anything less would be an abomination.

This is disgusting. This is Bankgok NOT Bagdhad people. This rubbish needs to stop now !

It is a clan war by any another name. No religious division to plumb,

but it is an us against them clan battle for power.

Of course one clan wants absolute total power and will use extreme violence to get it.

And the other side just wants to stop being the victim of the first side,

it's kleptocracy and vindictive facade of democracy government.

2 violent attacks against peaceful protests and even markets in 2 days

We are still waiting for any sympathetic comment from PM and government

You will be waiting a while she has absconded from the country.

If you are lucky she may give another 'staged' media statement from 'whereabouts unknown'

One clan already has the power. Remember? We had elections and a government. There was peace until Suthep came along. So who is the other side that is trying to get power using violence?

What's the difference between Baghdad and Bangkok?

Bangkok and Baghdad equals Babylon?

there are many more nightly attacks never mentioned in the news. Only those where there's a bigger crowd they can't brush it under the carpet. fact!!!

The red shirts have never said they will target any protestors with violence - please show me your links where it explicitly says violence will be used against protesters by red shirts.

RT@veen_NT: 5.25pm Nattawut: We are fir all-out battle although we don't have our stage in Bangkok yet. It will be our greatest fight.

RT@waanspeaking RT @nikhon_: (A) red shirt leader said on stage in Korat he/she was gratified by attack at PDRC Trat stage. Tida had to stop him/her.

Looks like their battle has started.

So yes, you have no links to any red shirts saying they will use violence against protestors.

Just as I thought you would not.

Not so. Not at all, just because there was not rally doesn't mean it was peace.

It was only downtime between the inevitable battles erupting again.

It was not peace, unless you are blind to the underlying problems driving it.

This was always there ready to go postal again, and Suthep didn't light the match,

Thaksin's amnesty and attempts to hobble checks an balances did that.

This is about the over-grasping of the Thaksin Kleptocracy in controlling the country,

yet again and driving it head long into bankruptcy on the world stage.

Suthep's just been carrying the 'We've had enough!' banner, for those too small to do so themselves.

Why would these people take their kids to rally sites? It's unbelievable.

A responsible mother/father should never do this.

Yes - a responsible parent will know that a peaceful rally for democracy is a peaceful rally for a better future for the kids, and hence a responsible parent would involve the kids as much as possible, so the kids understand why and what is at stake...

SICK peoples on the other hand - throw bombs at peaceful parents with peaceful kids...

.

Peaceful rally???? You must be joking.

Suthep and his mob is famous for peaceful rallies. Lol

peacful rallies get bombed, while pro government dont. hmm.

enough with the politics people. None of you know what you are talking about anyway. Two days in a row children killed by fools. Very very sad day. Show some respect. This is not 2010, its not 2008, its not 2006 or 1992 or 1932 or whatever else you bring up. grow up some of you.

Kids don't belong in protest areas, but they were not there for this reason:

I think your like 4 years late with that photo. whistling.gif

Sounds like a 5 or 6 year old boy was killed.
Anyone that pushes blame onto parents for the death of a son will be reported by me. I hope every poster that reads this does the same. Have some respect for the dead. You are only showing your true colors when you do what you do.
It is not the parents fault. It is the terrorists fault.
Shame.

I don't think anyone is blaming the parents for the deaths directly, but children should not be anywhere near danger, and in case you haven't realized, these places have become very dangerous lately. Go ahead, report this post if you want. But in case my point wasn't clear enough already ill say it again - childrens safely should be put above politics. that means getting those children out of the danger zones immediately.

Wow another self righteous western who thinks it could never happen back in his home country.

The worlds in for a rude awakening, along with the blind sheep.

I'm by both the Ratchaprasong and Asoke protest sites periodically. And over the past few weeks, despite a lot of Thai officialdom talk to the contrary, I've never seen any signs of Thai Army or police presence there aimed at protecting the crowds against episodes like the one today.

If anyone has seen or knows to the contrary, please do post it. But there appears to be very little to no effort on the part of the government to ensure the safety of these protest sites.

Nor, as best as I recall, have there been any arrests for the various prior bombing and shooting episodes aimed at anti-government folks or their allies. But, shockingly, somehow, the police did manage fairly quickly to arrest a group of men for the shooting of the Red Shirt leader in Udon Thani... Kind of makes you wonder.... hmmm....

Look at the photos the children were at stalls selling clothes among other things, they were NOT at any protests.

Anywhere near danger, like roads ?

Give it a rest you red lot you are just making your cause worse by your disgusting posts.

One thing I noticed about the pics taken in the immediate aftermath of the attack is the total lack of a police presence. This is on the street just outside Big C and is not near any stages. It's the middle of one of Bangkok's biggest shopping districts, and no police. First responders were the army and rescue crews. The police didn't show up until the army had apprehended some possible suspects.

The lack of a police presence, in light of all the terrorist activity is most disturbing. Do they not care about the security of shoppers on the busy weekend?

PRDC don't let them in.

This situation is now getting seriously out of hand.

Whatever side of the political fence you are on, no one can condone this kind of violence.

Let\s keep our heads fellas, let's try not insulting one another, after all, this is not our fight. Perhaps Thailand needs to go through this transitional period before they can find their balance. We all love Thailand and our families, let's hope, whichever way it goes, it ends with no more blood shed.

This happened out the front of a Big C.

You complain about the protesters blocking Bangkok and now you want children locked up in the safety of their homes?

If the Government and CMPO were fulfilling their duties (legally) and managing these protests the chances of these attacks occurring would be minimal!

The Government is failing to protect their own citizens.

In at least one of the cases, the little girl was working alongside her mother and grandmother at a stand. That's common, here. This is a terror campaign to make everyone fearful of simply being in Bangkok. If it's not a declaration of war, then what do you call it?

check out the video on richard's twitter of the kids being loaded into ambulances after being hit by the bomb at Big C.
