Group issues statement saying govt is illegitimate

BANGKOK: -- The caretaker government has lost the legitimacy to continue holding office after having breached the Constitution by seeking to divide the country, a statement from the Siam Prachapiwat group said yesterday.

The group, which is also known as the Siamese People Progress, is composed of academics from eight universities led by Banjerd Singkaneti, dean of the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).

The statement, titled the "Demise of the Caretaker Yingluck Government", was read out by the deputy dean of NIDA, Pichai Rattanadilok na Phuket. The statement said the Yingluck Shinawatra administration had lost its status as a caretaker government because of its failed schemes and unlawful acts.

The statement cited specific administration failures, such as the rice-pledging scheme, which has led to a massive loss of state funds and forced some farmers to take their own lives. The government has also failed to protect innocent protesters from being attacked by armed groups, the statement read.

"It is inevitable to suspect that the government is linked with these attacks.''

The statement also pointed out that the February 2 elections were still incomplete, leading to the failure to open the House of Representatives.

"As long as the government insists on staying in power, there is no chance the House can be opened,'' Pichai said.

The statement also said that the government's "organs" had violated the Constitution by resorting to violence to suppress and intimidate peaceful protesters, resulting in casualties, especially children. The group alleged that the government's supporters had taken up heavy arms in the belief that it would yield successful results as had happened during the 2010 red-shirt riots.

"The government's latest breach of the charter is a move to mobilise defence volunteers allegedly linked to attempts to divide the country by establishing an 'Isaan Lanna state'. The volunteers were not secretly mobilised but instructed to march in a show of force.

"The government and its components have repeatedly committed constitutional offences, so it can no longer cite excuses such as protecting democracy and the Constitution in order to stay in power," Pichai said.

PTP are like an anchor chained to the ankle of this nation, slowing down essential progress and dragging all this pointless baggage along with it. When Yingluck hoved into view, this nation had a pressing list of urgent infrastructure work and regulatory overhauls that needed to be focused on. Work she assured us was a top priority for her. Instead we saw passports-for-crims, rice pledging failure and the immortal kids-tabs project. This party is not just corrupt, nor is it just slow to implement critical reforms, it is actually holding those reforms back by its inaction and obstinacy.
