Interior Minister instructs provincial governors to support elections

BANGKOK, 6 Mar 2014 (NNT) - The Interior Minister has instructed all provincial governors as well as local administrative officials to encourage people to vote in the upcoming senatorial election and general election re-runs.

Interior Minister Jarupong Ruengsuwan gave the instruction to the governors during Wednesday’s VDO Conference session, stressing that civil servants are to provide full support to the local election commissioners in organizing the Senatorial election and the general election re-runs in 28 southern constituencies where voting was disrupted by anti-election protesters.

The governors were also told to inform local people of the current political situation, particularly on the legality of the interim government which still could not step down before the formation of a new government as required by Section 157 of the Constitution.

Mr. Jarupong also told the Interior officials to implore all to uphold the law, refrain from widening the rift among Thai citizens and place the nation’s benefit before that of themselves.

The minister shrugged off the denial by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee protesters to return the Interior Ministry’s office area, saying that he and other officials can still carry out their duties and will not give up negotiating with the protesters to return the venue.

Drought continues to take toll in several provinces

PNDAT570306001000101_06032014_095604.jpg

NAKHON SAWAN, 6 March 2014 (NNT) – The drought situation continues to affect people in many provinces, with large swathes of corn fields in Nakhon Sawan reportedly drying up.

The water supply for agriculture in Nakhon Sawan, provided by the Nong I-niang reservoir in Lad Yao district has for the past 3 months diminished. Consequently, corn grown on hundreds of rai of farmland have dried up, incurring significant losses to the farmers.

In Phitsanulok, the water level in Khwae Noi Bamrung Dan Dam has decreased to just 38% of capacity. As a result, water discharge for use in farmland irrigation has to be reduced. The Irrigation Department's office in the province warned farmers to avoid planting off-season rice because of insufficient water.

In Ayutthaya, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation officials were pumping water into reservoirs to store it for irrigation use. The water quantity would only suffice for the 1st batch of rice. Previously, farmers were told to strictly avoid growing off-season rice; however, many of them chose to ignore the warning and planted the crop in the face of water shortage.

‘Phongthep’ confident caretaker government can continue working

BANGKOK 6 March 2014 (NNT) — Deputy Prime Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana has said he is confident the current caretaker government will stay in power until a new government is formed.

Mr. Phongthep expressed his confidence that the current caretaker government would be able to hold its post until a new elected government could be formed in accordance with Section 181 of the Constitution.

He, however, declined to say when the list of the newly appointed Cabinet members would be presented to His Majesty the King or when the oath taking ceremony would take place.

In regard to a clause in the Constitution stipulating that at least 95% of MPs are required for the first House meeting, to be held within 30 days after the election, to elect a new Prime Minister, Mr. Phongthep stated that it was the responsibility of the Election Commission (EC) to organize elections in order to come up with the required number of MPs.
