EC mulls holding poll re-runs in 3 southern provinces

BANGKOK, 6 March 2014 (NNT) - The Election Commission is set to hold poll re-runs in the southern region on the same day as the Senate election.

Election Commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn said the agency has been discussing solutions to the election results in constituencies disrupted by protests and road blocks during advance voting in January and the nationwide election in early February.

Mr Somchai made known that there is a possibility that the polls could be re-run in the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat on March 30.

The EC however has not yet reached the same decision for unresolved constituencies in Prachuap Kiri Khan and Satun. He said the political situation in the two provinces are still prone to violence.

A final decision on poll re-runs in the region will be made during a meeting of in Songkhla on March7.

The Pheu Thai party earlier urged that the EC stage poll re-runs on March 30 and said that its petition with the court involving poll re-runs in the 28 southern constituencies should be withdrawn.

Consumer confidence plunges to record low in 12 years

231066-imagejpeg-354966-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) in February hit the lowest in the past 12 years due mainly to ongoing political instability and rising cost of living.

Director of the Economic and Business Forecasting Centre of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) Mr Thanavath Phonvichai said the ongoing political stalemate was among main factors dampening the CCI in February for continuous 11 months.

He disclosed that the CCI in February hit the lowest record in the past 12.4 years since the CCI has been monitored by the centre in 2001.

Thanavath said the indices were worrisome and added that ongoing political protests, overdue payments to farmers under the rice pledging scheme, lower purchasing power, public concerns on economic directions and future income as well as declining industrial sector, which may take its toll on employment, were among reasons behind such low figures.

He said as of now the people are starting to worry that the situation may get worse. Their purchasing power and income are starting to decline, as well as job opportunities.

He said that the Thai economy is entering a recession period and tends to slow down until at least the end of Q2.

Unstable political environment may cut down this year’s growth to less than 3 percent.

He added the centre, however, will readjust the country’s 2014 economic growth again on March 20.
