Royal cremation for late abbot of Saket Monastery

BANGKOK, 10 March 2014 (NNT) - Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on March 9 officiated on behalf of His Majesty the King at the cremation of Somdet Phra Buddhacharya, or Kiaw Uppaseno in Dharma name, one of the country's highly revered monks, at the crematorium of Thepsirin Monastery in Pomprap Satru-phai District, Bangkok.

Somdet Phra Buddhacharya passed away on August 10, 2013 due to blood infections. He was born Kiaw Chokchai in Surat Thani on January 11, 1928. He was ordained as novice at the age of 12 at Wat Phu-khao Thong in his native province and then ordained as monk at the age of 21 at Saket Monastery in Bangkok. Somdet Kiaw, as His Holiness was commonly called when alive, had been appointed to many key roles in the ecclesiastic circle. He was made Phra Racha-khana or chief of one of the northeastern administrative chapters of monks, a secretary to the Supreme Patriarch, the abbot of Saket Monastery, committee members of the Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand, chief of the northeastern Sangha region, and president of the executive committee for the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand.

Somdet Kiaw had strived for firm foundation of Buddhism in Thailand and abroad. He visited several countries to find ways to establish Buddhist temples. He had taken a key role in laying down the work of Phra Dhammaduta (พระธรรมทูต) or ecclesiastic missions, leading to the dissemination of Buddhism at local and international levels.

DDPM: Amounts of water in major dams drop to 43%

BANGKOK, 10 March 2014 (NNT) – According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), the hot weather condition has dried up water in many areas as the combined amounts of usable water in major dams reduced to only 43 percent.

DDPM Director-General Chatchai Promlert says 91 districts of 20 provinces in Thailand have already been declared drought disaster areas as these provinces are in urgent need of water supplies for both household and agricultural purposes.

Phitsanulok and Satun were the latest provinces added to the list because of severe water shortage in some districts.

According to him, the total amount of water kept in major dams across the country is 43.6 billion cubic meters or 62 percent of the total capacity. However, only 20.1 billion cubic meters or 43 percent of the water is usable.

BiViJuJCIAE9dBW-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The first public reform forum kicked off this morning at Lumphini park with poverty and narrowing social gap being the first topic to debate.

The outdoor forum is part of the two-week long reform campaign announced last night by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) leader Suthep Thaugsuban to give knowledge to the people on the reform of the country of all sectors.

Suthep said that the PDRC will hold outdoor reform debates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout a two-week long campaign, starting Monday at the Youth Center in Lumphini park.
