5 years driving license=expired, non immi-b= expired. What now ?

Hi Thaivisa Forum members,

I'm having a delicate question:

the 5 years driving license is expired 2 weeks ago. The non immigrant B Visa has expired even before the driving licenses expiry date. Now on VOA (30 day stamp) in TH.

I'm also going to a third country, which means, not my homeland, and I do need a driving license in the "new" Country. Normally I was planning, to get the Thai Driving License transferred to my new countries driving license (which is much easier than making a new driving license in that new country, which is almost impossible).

As the driving license has expired, i cant use it in the country, where i'm going to. So i need to extend it, before i go.
Are there any chances, that i can extend the 5 years driving license, to even a 1 year validity, if the 5 years extension is not possible without holding a non immigrant visa ???

or can i get it extended abroad in that countries Royal Thai Embassy ?

Any helpful advice is highly appreciated, because if I haven't the driving license, I might not get the new job.

thanks,

S.H.

Been there. I had to go back to a one year till I got my visa sorted

So, what I am understanding is, I can go with the current VOA stamp in the Passport to the LTO and ask for the 1 year DL until "unil i got my visa issue sorted" ???

is that correct bangsaenguy ?

thanks a thousand times for the info.

You can only get an one year DL without a non-immigrant visa.

The problem is that it is stated temporary driving license on it and you can not use it abroad or get an IDP.

Lots of discussions as well about the validity abroad of the 1-year Thai DL. So be careful with that.

Took me to long to post this, PS beat me to it. I don't think the discussion about validity abroad is as definite as PS puts it though.

Thank you for all the information,

looks like, i have to try my luck with going to the land transport office in bkk near chatuchak.

i think, i will be good with the one year temporary DL, because i simply have to get it translated to the countries language, and if i carry the "translated" print of it, together with the original one, i should be fine. but yeah, this is not the issue here, i wanted to know about the possibility to get the driving license renewed, even just for 1 year, here from TH.

Do I have to provide the Address registration, which i have to get then at the immigration office ?? still not clear for me, how i have to move on...

but thanks anyway, :)

When going overseas I'd also produce the previous 5 year license to the LTO (if that's what it would be in that country) to demonstrate you had it previously.

I got my original 1-year license here with just an entry stamp. Didn't even have a tourist visa. So in theory you should be able to get your license again with that. You will need certificate of residence (usually from immigration, but I get mine from the police station and it works just fine) and a medical certificate (any clinic will give you one for 50-100 baht, no exam).
