Teacher shot and burned in Thai south

BANGKOK, March 14, 2014 (AFP) - Gunmen shot dead a female teacher in insurgency-riven southern Thailand on Friday and set her body on fire, police said, in the latest attack on an education worker.

The 42-year-old was riding a motorbike to work at an elementary school in the Mayo district of Pattani province when she was attacked.
"Gunmen shot her and set fire to her body," a local police officer said by telephone.

She was the 171st education worker to be killed during the decade-long conflict in Thailand's Muslim-dominated deep south near the border with Malaysia.

The insurgency has claimed more than 5,900 lives -- the majority of them civilians -- in near-daily attacks including shootings, bombings and even beheadings.

Teachers are among those targeted by the shadowy network of militants for their perceived collaboration with the Thai state.

Experts say a recent spike in deaths is partly due to the stalling of peace talks while the Thai government struggles to deal with opposition protests in Bangkok.

The insurgents want a level of autonomy from Thailand, which annexed the region over a century ago.

They accuse Thai authorities of widespread human rights abuses and a lack of respect for their religion, culture and language.

What a shame. Why do teachers keep going down there?

One reason might just be that they actually live there and have done with their families living in peace with their Muslim neighbours for generations.

It has got much worse down there in the last 12 years.

"They accuse Thai authorities of widespread human rights abuses and a lack of respect for their religion, culture and language"

I think we have the pot calling the kettle black here.

I would say 5,900 deaths, with teachers being the mostly targeted, would qualify as human rights violations.

The "religion of peace"....again and again and.....

Predictable, incorrect and insulting.

But that's nothing new on TV.

Respectfully suggest you do a little bit of research about the situation in the South before just mindlessly adding to to the already excess religious hatred in the world.

I'm a Darwinian Athiest btw.

I do hope you're not playing the religious card to justify the killing of innocents.

If they have a score to settle then fine...... but behave like men not cowards. And of course the irony is that their biggest hate figure is living in paradise in a muslim country. coffee1.gif

We do not know if the murderers justify the killings in the name of Islam. In anycase your assertion is not accurate, happening right now in a neighbouring country in the name of Buddhist nationalism.

What a shame. Why do teachers keep going down there?

Believe it or not teachers are often posted down there if they wish to get on or when they freshly qualify, ive known half a dozen over the years both new and those trying to get a position as say a sub head or head etc. Openings down there come up.

I asked the same thing to them is it worth it ? of course most apply to other regions as soon as they arrive but even so.....

Can you imagine having to do a tour of duty as a civilian in a zone like that just to get on ?

So much violence in the name of Gods that only exist in the minds of the corrupt believers.

One of the biggest evils to ever plague humankind and prey on the innocent is religion. Throughout history it's ability to cause war and suffering has no peers. Religion of all ilks. My favorite definition of "faith" is: The ability to believe in something one knows not to be true.
