Suranand: Tawil will be reinstated in 45 days

BANGKOK, 15 March 2014 (NNT) - Prime minister's secretary-general Suranand Vejjajiva has confirmed that the order to reinstate Tawil Pleansri as the chief of the National Security Council (NSC) will be carried out within 45 days.

Mr Suranand said more details on the reshuffle will be reviewed by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra next week before being discussed in the weekly cabinet meeting.

According to him, the current NSC chief Pol Lt Paradorn Pattanathabutr will likely be appointed advisor to the premier once Mr Tawin resumes his post.

The ruling last week overruled the Prime Minister’s Office's order to remove then NSC chief Tawin from his position on September 30, 2011. The court said in the verdict that the government’s transferl of Mr Tawin from office was an abuse of power.

Monitoring bracelets seen as a success
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Department of Corrections has been using electronic monitoring bracelets on 39 convicts, with the first offender having completed his seven-day probation yesterday.

"He is a convicted drunk driver," the department's director general Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol said.

She said offenders wearing the bracelets were convicts on probation, temporarily released from prison or undergoing drug-rehabilitation programmes.

Ruenvadee added that the convicts were happy to wear the monitoring bracelets, which is now in a pivotal phase, because they could spend time with their families.

The department has 200 of the bracelets and plans to use them in Bangkok and adjacent provinces first. It will seek bids later this year for the procurement of 3,000 more such bracelets.

"We will then use these devices in 19 other provinces," she said.

Suspect in fatal pub brawl surrenders
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The prime suspect in a recent fatal pub brawl has surrendered to police but has only made a partial confession.

Jakkraphan Yooto, 22, is facing charges of murder, attempted murder and the unauthorised carrying of a firearm.

The suspect's father handed him over to police on Thursday evening after the Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant.

"We have solid evidence against him," Colonel Charoen Srisalak said yesterday in his capacity as deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police Division 2.

One man was killed and three others injured in the pub brawl earlier this week.

Charoen said police had already interrogated 10 witnesses who all provided useful information.
