STR rally to support Navy Special Warfare Command chief

BANGKOK, 15 March 2014 (NNT) – The Network of Students and People for Reform of Thailand (STR) rallied on Friday to express support for the Navy Special Warfare Command Chief, Rear Admiral Winai Klom-in, who is expected to be transferred from his post in the latest military reshuffle.

The Deputy Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Permanent Secretary's Office, Colonel Khongchip Tantrawanit, represented the permanent secretary in receiving a petition opposing the transfer, from the anti-government group on Friday.

The STR group, under the leadership of Dr. Kamonphan Chiwaphansi, expressed the view that the transfer of Rear Admiral Winai would result in the deterioration of the morale of his subordinates, as he had performed his duty well.

The group earlier submitted a similar petition to the Office of His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary. The protesters also rallied in front of the Royal Thai Navy headquarters and at the residence of Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda in support of the cause.

Air quality improves in North; health risk remains in 4 provinces

PNEVN570315001000101_15032014_015346.jpg

CHIANG MAI, 15 March 2014 (NNT) – The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has advised residents that the overall air quality in 9 northern provinces has improved, although the air quality in 4 provinces was still deemed threatening to health.

The Department Director-General Chatchai Phrom-loet reported that particle matter readings on Friday showed an improvement at most of the stations that analyze air samples. , Even so, the air quality in Chiang Rai, Phayao, Lampang, Nan and Phrae was deemed to be at a level that could affect health. Meanwhile air quality in Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai and Tak has improved, either to 'good' or at least 'average' levels.

Mr. Chatchai said the department was requesting cooperation from the public in abstaining from setting any kind of fire, in order to avoid adding to the intensity of the haze in the North. Fire engines and water trucks were also helping to spray water into the air to reduce the amount of airborne particle matter.

Mr. Chatchai said those living in areas covered by haze should avoid being outdoors for extended periods, and use either a handkerchief or a face mask to cover their nose and mouth whenever they leave the house.

Those afflicted by the widespread haze can request urgent assistance on the 24-hour hotline number 1784.
