Jeremy Clarkson accused of 'racism' during Top Gear series finale in Thailand

i'm planning to drive in Burma in the is next year or so. So I watched the show to get some idea o=f what it might be like. I certainly didn't realise that the VERY FIRST UK people to be allowed to drive through Burma were going to take such a flippant attitude to the country and i wonder what damage they've done for future visitors.

I expect a lot of government officials will get to watch this show to see how their respective countries are portrayed by the BBC - this isn't going to help future visitors to the country one bit.

Let me tell you that they weren't the first UK people to drive through Burma. Plenty have driven through, particularly in recent months and the last couple of years. Only difference is that the vast majority have been granted permission to drive through more "standard" areas of Myanmar, not the Taunggyi-Kengtung road as the Top Gear team did.

es - I have spoken to those who have driven through on "world" drives etc.

With the coming of ASEAN it is extremely likely that Burma will make it easier for people to enter from Thailand in particular in their own cars. At present there are convoys, escorted drives etc or you have to have a driver.

if the situation changes in the next 12 months it will mean ordinary private motorists will be able to visit the country.

There are quite a few problems with opening up the roads to foreigners and the Burmese junta has been very reluctant to allow access to foreigners, so a program like this is hardly going to encourage them, is it?

Neither is the world news or documentaries that have proven facts.

if we posted on here every time we heard the word farang the servers would melt down - pot / kettle / black (or white)

For your edification, since the term "farang" is not used to refer to an ethnic group that historically has been

oppressed and victimized, your suggestion is totally ludicrous. It also appears to be a bald-faced attempt to

excuse racist slurs by trying to confuse the issue.

Give it up! It won't work. Most folks can see right through that kind of charade.

Right, right. Because as we all know, only 'an ethnic group that historically has been oppressed and victimized' has racial slurs used against it.

I'm confused, since when is it racist to say that a bridge has a slope on it, as in 1 side is lower than the other?

When it's a deliberate double-entendre.

The likes of Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Richard Pryor and friends better watch those 'double-entendres'.

Yeah, because how we all know, only blacks and Asians have been 'historically oppressed and victimized',

That must come as a bit of a shock to all the Irish Catholics, South Americans who lived under military dictatorships, Europeans in the middle/dark ages, Russisns under Stalin, white farmers in Mugabe's Zimbabwe, Brits under Roman rule, etc, etcetera.. How far do you want to go back?

Don't know what world you live in, but it's not that difficult for intelligence folks to understand the meaning of racial oppression.

You love to use the term "liberal," but the antithesis has an infinitely more despicable character -- the idiocy of white racist bigotry.

Clarkson is British. When I was living in the UK he was always on the telly.

He's always been an offensive brat. And along with many people, I hate him.

And yes, every time his stupid childish programmes appeared on tv, I changed channels.

Horrible nasty man.

He really is a horrible nasty man, that's why he should run for PM.

Most of his points are fair and true, but no celebrity or peer has the balls to stand up and say it - unlike Jezza. Give the man credit, he punched Piers Morgan ! Any man worthy of that achievement is a hero in my book.

I reckon his sarcasm and wit flies over your head and that's why you didn't like him 'on the telly' when you spent your time in the UK? Learn some humour outside of political correctness big man!

*Point to note:

His apparently "childish" tv shows include the top watched Motoring TV show in the world.

Jezza for PM!!!!!! YEAH!!

Sent from my very clever thingy that uses battery far too quickly

Nothing ridiculous about it. You're the one who introduced oppression and victimization into this argument.

I just gave examples to show the stupidity and ignorance of that.

Racial ethnic slurs happen against ALL races and all ethnicities, whether they've been oppressed or not, though many races/ethnicities have been oppressed at one time or another.

Your ridiculous assumption that racial slurs only occur against certain groups like blacks or Asians was proven wrong yet you're so blinded by liberalism that you seem to think only whites are racist. Again, another fallacy.

There're slurs or epithets for everyone. Whites use them against blacks and vice-versa. Asians use them against whites and vice-versa. It's not the domain of one group to use or be responsible for this type of language. Nothing '18th century' about that. But I probably think you have your centuries confused if you're trying to point out what I think you are.

You'd be better off finding real racism with the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton or Eric Holder than someone like Jeremy Clarkson.

Now you are showing your abysmal ignorance. The issue is not what constitutes an ethnic slur. The issue is the nature

of racism, and the fact that it can only be used as a weapon by a dominant ethnic group against an oppressed group.

Since you are incapable of understanding this simple reality, it is futile to discuss the issue with you.

You may now continue your clueless sojourn in the fog of ignorance. Over and out.

UPDATE:

BBC faces £1MILLION racism lawsuit over Jeremy Clarkson's 'slope' quip on Top Gear Burma special
Somi Guha, 36, is suing BBC over alleged racist remark on Top Gear
Jeremy Clarkson caused outrage by using word 'slope' in Burma special
Term is a derogatory phrase for people of Asian descent
Actress Ms Guha's lawyers say action could cost the BBC £1million
They demand organisation apologises and takes show off the air
By LIZZIE EDMONDS
An actress is suing the BBC for up to £1million after Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson allegedly made a racist remark during the series finale of the show.
Indian-born Somi Guha, 36, has instructed lawyers after Clarkson used the word 'slope' - a derogatory term for people of Asian descent - in the Top Gear Burma special.
Ms Guha claims that broadcasting Clarkson's comment amounts to unlawful discrimination by a public body.
Her lawyers, Equal Justice, claim her action could cost the BBC £1 million in punitive damages under equality laws unless it apologises and takes the hit motoring show off the air.
They say she is one of a group of people who were offended by the term - and so sought legal advice from the firm, who previously worked on racism allegations surrounding reality show Celebrity Big Brother.
A BBC spokeswoman for Top Gear said the Corporation had no comment on Miss Guha's action.
Clarkson used his Twitter account today to respond to the allegation, and said: 'I'm not a racist. I am currently sitting in a bar with a man who lives quite near Wales.'

Who on earth is Somi Guha when she's at home? You might ask

Turns out she is an actress but the guy on the bridge is probably better known than she is.

Not a bad way to get yourself better known now is is it?

I thought JG's remark was quite witty and if I were Asian I doubt if I would have been offended in anyway whatsoever.

Having been called a sheepsha**er by many an Englishman in jest I've been around long enough to know there's nothing racist about those type of jibes. It comes with the territory no matter your race or colour.

Never ceases to amaze me why Caucasians are always the ones branded as racist yet whether we be at home or abroad we can mix with virtually anyone unlike some races who no matter where they go set up single race communities and want nothing to do with others..We have all cracked jokes about other races at sometime or another but without malice.

God forbid the day we have to stop telling jokes about the Scotsman the Englishman and the Irishman because we fear we might end up in court.

This Somi Guha is being deliberately controversial in my opinion. It's the oldest trick in the book to gain fame and some people have made millions doing it and if the truth be known they couldn't care less about any man anywhere on any bridge.

The BBC should file her complaint where it belongs....in the bin

So who will get the money? Certainly not the guy on the bridge. A completely un-related actress sniffing for a pay day, and some lawyer sharks

Anyhow, BBC has made some very good publicity from this, and they are likely either win or settle to a much lower amount.

Does Somi Guha know nothing? Racists (May they rot in hell) would call her a Jinly not a slope.

When she is pretending to be Portugese as Somi De Suza i think they would call her a wop. (May they rot in hell)

Is pretending to be Indian when it will help you get a job a racist thing to do, or pretending to be Portugese for Visa perposes?

I find race and racism very confusing.

"The issue is not what constitutes an ethnic slur. The issue is the nature of racism, and the fact that it can only be used as a weapon by a dominant ethnic group against an oppressed group."

WRONG! Again.

I quote from http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism

"Racism is actions, practices or beliefs, or social or political systems that consider different races to be ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other, based on presumed shared inheritable traits, abilities, or qualities."

I quote from http://m.dictionary.com/definition/racism

"racism[ rey-siz-uhm ]

noun

1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.

3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races."

As you can see, I've proven 'racism' comes in more than one form, not just the 'dominant group' using it against the 'oppressed group'.

But it seems you've spat the dummy and no longer wish to engage in this debate. Losing's a bitch, isn't it. I can go on proving my point forever.
