Removing adhesive from hardwood floor

Featured Replies

Does anyone have experience of removing carpet adhesive from a hardwood floor? Any recommended products for removing without damaging the floor and if so where can I buy in Bangkok? Many thanks

Moving to DIY.

Do you have a photo of the offending adhesive container, knowing exactly what type of stickum we're dealing with can be very handy?

If you don't know, you could try ordinary rubbing alcohol (ethanol / isopropanol) and gently scraping with a putty knife.

If the alcohol doesn't work, try Eucalyptus Oil... it makes short work of pretty much anything sticky.

Is this the residue from a carpet tape?

If so warming it up with Wifey's hair dryer could be a means to get it off (don't tell Wifey I suggested it, I want to live).

Thanks all for the helpful hints. It is indeed carpet glue from a rug. I tried the hair dryer (with wifey's knowledge and am still alive) but there is just too much and I would be there for days. Will try the eucalyptus and alcohol. Thanks again all

Mineral oil (or baby oil, which is the same thing) can dissolve adhesives. Naphtha is stronger still. It's used as a makeup remover to dissolve sticky spirit gum that is used to apply special effects prosthetics. Naphtha is commonly available as Ronson lighter fluid, in the well-known yellow & blue bottles.

Industrial reagent grade acetone should do it, I guess you don't have any of that lying around.

Nail polish remover.
