When I read online today regarding the missing plane from Malaysia:

''Thailand's military says its radar detected a plane that may have been Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 just minutes after the missing jetliner's communications went down, and that it didn't share the information earlier because it wasn't specifically asked for it.''

I had to laugh and once again.... reminded of the fact that thai people are not logical people.

A few other small examples:

- I went to buy a new push bike and the bike I wanted to purchase did not have any peddles attached. I asked him if he could screw them on so that I could take it for a test ride before buying. He said no, only after paying for the bike. I opened my wallet and showed him 10,000 baht cash and walked to the store next door and purchased a bike from a more logical businessman.

- I was on a bus that was stuck in traffic really close to Ekkami bus station. The traffic was in a standstill for at least 5 min and the front door of the bus was right near the BTS escalator. I got out of my seat and indicated to the driver to open the door but he said no. There was no danger as the bus was on the left side close to the gutter. Some other farang joined me and after a few minutes the guy finally opened the door.

- I went camping with my gf and we put the tent up in a good spot. It was in a national park and really quiet- there was only 1 other tent up - a long distance away from us. Then a thai couple arrive and they drove around and then started driving towards our base camp and I though <deleted>. They got out and said hi and were eyeing up a spot really close to our tent. It was VD day (valentines day not venerial disease day) and my gf and I wanted some privacy. I could not believe that they were proposing to put up their tent a mere 5m from ours and the look of contempt that I gave them may have gotten the message through their illogical mind. Thankfully they decided on another spot which was more than 10 to 15 m away.

I have many other examples but would prefer to read yours. Its all a good laugh

Logical or analytical thinking is not taught at schools here, so common sense is a rare commodity, hence the reason why some things are almost impossible to accomplish , while other complicated matters are done in minutes

I would have to say honestly, yes. Not all of course, but pretty much all the interactions of illogical people I can remember have been Thais (here and at home).

I used to work with a lot of Indians (from India - not Geronimo), some of those guys and girls could easily compete for dumb arse award too - however, they were always very willing to learn or understand why another way is better (although I did have a few Indian women in tears during meeting after continuing to push an incorrect idea over and over after several explanations as to why they were wrong - caste problem there with Indian equivalent of hi-so girls, men no problems). Thai face makes it hard for them to accept correction let alone criticism - just have to look at every café/bar menu/sign to see silly misspellings that are pointed out by every tourist visiting, but continually ignored. Even heard Thais arguing with English speakers about the spelling of English words - me I just smile inwards and watch .

In the UK at a Thai festival I helped run once (about ten years ago I guess) - some guys attempted to put a large metal frames facia on the side of a smaller metal framed tent. Basically it was a square frame weighed down in each corner with a canvass/plastic awning over it. The facia was a flat frame (box steel frame) that surrounded the front opening to give signs on the sides and over the door (over the top of the tent) - a real wind breaker, like a square rigged sail! There was high winds and rain. They decided to lash it using a few coat hangers and using rope to tie it top and bottom corners to the tent frame. I explained that the wind would tear it down, and showed them how to lash it using choking up and down the sides for strength and to stop the movement. They undid what I did and returned to the one thumb knot per corner and one coat hanger twisted mid way up either upright. Five minutes later in crashed to the floor nearly taking half a dozen passers by with it! (It was heavy enough it took four people to lift it up right - it was obvious it would not hold with the lightest of breezes let alone a storm). Suddenly the Thai men had disappeared and a monk asked me to help fix it - with a Thai teenage girl and a couple of monks to hold it up, we choke lashed it and there it stayed through several hours of stormy weather.

I recently mentioned to a family member in the N.W. of Thailand I was in the market for a new hooded BBQ (weber style) to which she proclaimed she'd bring me one on her next visit free of charge as a gift. When she arrived there was a Huge bag of charcoal in the boot of the car, but no BBQ! When I quizzed her to the whereabouts of the BBQ she explained it wouldn't fit in the car because the charcoal took up so much room.

He`ll probably even moan about that, that it`s the wrong brand of soap, the water was too hot, the girl was too cold, the girl spoke 32 different languages fluently with no accents, but English wasn`t part of her vocabulary.

I don't see what logic has to do with the situations you mention. Bike guy might've been cautious. Bus driver has rules. Campers were being friendly.(Sex camping on VD? New one on me.) Most people are not mind readers.

It's Togic not Logic! Wherever you go it's in use. Just drive down the highway from BKK to Koh Samui, you'll get to and area where they sell "salty eggs" 10 stands in a row on one side of the road and 10 more on the other, but not another stand anywhere else in the 800 kilometers. I live near a very small town, there are 4 Ma and Pa grocery stores, all on the four corners of the main intersection, two owned by the same family. There are two 7-11s less than 60 meters from each other, operated by the same family. My wife has a small restaurant in the village where we live. She was doing okat and all of a sudden there were three more. They all closed finally, my wife survived only because I subsidize her operation (nice to have peace and quiet at home). There are only 21 houses in the village. I could go on and on, I taught Math in a Thai seconary school and Logic was one of the subjects, it was a joke!

on the other hand, farangs are the naive, laughing stock in serveral neighborhoods I know of. It has to do with how quickly and illogically they give their entire savings to the gal down the street who has been hooking farangs in Pattaya for 3 years. OP, illogical they may be but all your examples point to stupidity and ignorance rather than lack of logic.

Here is my two bit story.

About 2 years ago I was bitten by a dog on a public beach. For the first time in my life. I never was before afraid of the dogs and I'm not afraid of them now.

But this was a special case. It was a pack of 8 dogs, they ran out of one beach property and were running around me in a perfect circle barking until the leader darted in and bit me.

I got really mad because a young Thai woman came to the edge of the property and was calmly watching the attack.

I went back to my condo, had a guard take me to a local Police station by his bike and made a statement describing the situation, the dog that bit me, the property etc.

Police wrote it down, took me in their car to that property we all saw these 8 dogs and the owner. After this they took me to my condo and advised to get injections at a hospital.

All was peachy nice. I got 5 trips to the hospital, 5 injections and put it out of my mind.

Now to the point:

The owners statements to Police in my presence were

- these are not my dogs;

- my daughter saw you play with my dogs on the beach;

- you shouldn't have entered my property;

- I am a poor man (cannot pay for treatment);

- OK, I will put this dog down.

This is a story that proves him to be a liar and an illogical one.

As to all Thais - I do not know, I have been bitten only once.

My gut feeling goes with your statement - Thais are ready to lie anytime and those without proper education must be illogical.

All of your personal examples show nothing of the kind.

- the like shop owner was within his rights not to have wear and tear put in a bike which he has no guarantee of being bought, apart from an idiot flashing cash about implying he would.

- the bus driver was playing it safe. And he gets criticised for it?

- as for the campers, you were in a public place, in which case, they are within their rights to camp there too. But I guess they met you, and hightailed it.....which judging by your post, sounds like a perfectly logical thing to do.
