Actually, both my husband (here in Thailand) and my brother ( in the U.S.) have built what they call "personal man-caves" that are nothing more than ironing rooms. Both invested in expensive professional grade ironing systems. Hubby does his in the cool of early morning, before I get up, listening to his news and political shows on the computer. My brother, in the U.S. has a wide-screen TV in his ironing room and watches sports while he does the family's ironing. Both would hate knowing that I'm outing their ironing hobby on an internet forum.

Sounds like your husband and brother both need to take their balls back...

She drives me to distraction with her washing machine quirks.

Putting ridiculous amounts of conditioner in so everything smells nice even though nothing is washed properly and everything has streaks due to cramming the machine full.

Then leaving the washing in the machine for a couple of days to fester before hanging it out.

She will then put the dried clothes in the dirty laundry basket instead of the clean basket and the whole process starts again.

As for ironing....well i do it myself.

It feels good to get this off my chest on here and air my dirty linen in public.

Well, you always can show her how it is done coffee1.gif ;;;;or maybe help her thumbsup.gif

Bought a brand new high-tech washing machine, which she indicated as a must-have.

We have it for over a year now, yet she has never used it.

Always hand washes with cold water and lots of detergents.

Crazy in my opinion, but I don´t argue, since she does the washing.

The same applies to our induction cooking plate and vacuum cleaner. She never uses them.

Also she doesn´t want the packing plastic sticky foils taken off of anything to preserve the ¨new¨ impression.

Bought an expensive Japanese brand machine...very high tech electronics...simple to use...over half the time...my lady squats over a water hose and wash basin...doing what she knows best...if she is happy...then I am happy...

Ditto - Korean machine - she washes in big tub, then throws all into the nice M/C for rinse & spin. Happy as long as I keep my mouth shut.

It's difficult to get stains like grease or blood out of clothes with cold water.

This is totally wrong.

In fact, if you put clothes with blood on them in hot water, it will set the stain and can never be removed.

Blood must be washed with cold water.

If you don't believe me, try it...

I give my washing to lady in shop, she comes to house to pick up and drop off 250 baht for big load. I'll have to ask her if she know's about

this ironing thingy.

She do good job even socks are smooth and flat

1. cold water is best for blood and protein stains. how do i know? i live on kibbutz and my ex mother in law runs the kibbutz laundry. all our laundry goes through a industrial style set up and so if i want stuff to come out looking normal i do my own. so only jeans sheets and animal work clothes go to kibbutz laundry. and MIL knows her detergents etc so i learned form her.

2/ thai men do their own laundry. who do u htink laudners all their clothes when they are living over seas in ramshackles housing and working 14 hour days? the maid? or they have a filipina gf that shows up once a week and she tends to cook/clean/launder in basins OR they do it in basins and if their employers feel generaous then they get a washing machine, the simple ones front or side loader, and in israel mostly we use cold water cause the machine has to heat up the water and thats time and money; the thais do tend to break the machines cause they forgeth work tools and stuff in pockets or they pry the doors off when the childproof alarm hasnt switched off yet.

my THAI husband has a side job of fixing said machines,m he knows laundry and machines inside and out, literally, and he does his own work clothes. he also sews on buttons, darns, and can use a sewing machine.

3/ white vinegar is a great thing in a washing machine. cleans, deoderizes and in our case gets rid of all the calcite deposits.

4/ there is nothing wrong with taking laundry, putting in basin, goeing to shower and stomping on the clothes then rinsing well. works for me and my hotel uniforms etc... if i dont have a load to do.

5/ those 'fancy' machines are useless. you only need basic cycles: cold economic cycle , warm cycle, and doube soak /rinse for baby clothes and work clothes. all the rest is bs. nowadays most clothes can be washed together if they werent bougfht in india, as most dyes run out after the first few prewashes.

our machines only do 5 kilos at a time.

no need to iron most stuff. hang on a hangar while damp ... button up the shirt... or dress

Also most top loaders are cold water washing machines.

A decent front loader hot water machine cost at least 3x more compared to the cold water ones so most Thai buy the cheap ones.

It's difficult to get stains like grease or blood out of clothes with cold water.

I think some of the detergents are formulated to work in cold water and look for words like oxy-clean, oxy-magic -- basically oxygen bleach that does a good job of removing blood, fecal and food stains (even from colored fabrics) if allowed to soak for a time in tepid water. (These words may be written in transliterated Thai on the package) I discovered this type of detergent when we lived here part-time and actually took it back to the U.S. because we didn't have anything like it there, at least at the time.

I don't think you need to be boiling your clothes to get them clean if you have the proper detergents and soak time.

Cold water in Thailand ?? It is normally 24 - 32 degrees C.....

if they don't believe you they are wrong of course! But some are probably not very young any more, need to be excused biggrin.png they probably do not know the washing powders changed a lot in fifty years, with enzymes inside for instancewink.png

My guess is that she doesn't trust that a washing machine in Thailand is grounded because she has expirience with using one that wasn't grounded and got a shock while emptying the machine with wet clothes and touching bare metal. My wife uses a wooden toss salad fork/spoon scisors type thing to empty the machine. She refuses to believe the machine is grounded and she won't get a shock. It's kinda cool though. Every time i see her at the machine, I sneak up behind her and poke her with a finger while yelling ZZzzzzzzttt! She jumps like hell.

^^ clean implies 60°C or more in many cases. washing powder only doesn't do the job at all. i'm talking underwear and stuff.

there's a difference between getting rid of stains and stuff and getting rid of fecal traces (nasty bacteria) moreover since many bacteria actually feel great in 30-40°C water and their volume will actually grow during washing...

60C = clean?

I guess you wear tight t-shirts that were once loose.

Mine has taken to the machine although she does some items by hand still.

Most of my underwear looks like a nappy as the elastic is shot after a few washings!

She also crams the machine full, one of her quirks like believing you can keep old food in the fridge for 7 or 8 years.

Front loaders are readily available so I think the OP doesn't want to buy one! Like me!

During the VN War, when hundreds of thousands of Americans were here, it was noticed that washing was done on concrete or rocks, so one group brought washboards from the US for the washer women. Washing Machines were not available anywhere up country. The board was demonstrated and each washer woman got one - all immediately went back to pounding wash on the pavement..

Our rental condo came with a top loader and I can make it produce clean laundry IF I don't fill it more than 1/2 full, but set the water level on high and use a full measure of detergent with oxy-clean bleach AND use the super soak cycle, which takes over an hour. With that cycle, the tub fills full, churns around a for a time and then sits there, with a little churn every few minutes, basically letting the laundry soak for about 1/2 hours. That cycle results in laundry that is clean.

Oh yeah, a couple capfuls of Downy in the rinse cycle helps a lot, too, along with promptly hanging the laundry once the cycle is complete.

Agree with the soaking. My wife used to wash my work shirts and trousers with all the other clothes and they came out with softener streaks through them. So I decided to leave them all my clothes until Friday night. I put them in the machine, add the detergent, run the wash cycle for a couple of minutes then turn off the machine and let them soak overnight. Finish the wash on Saturday morning. Much better results.

read again --- UNDERWEAR. ask any specialist. fecal bacteria don't die at low °C no matter how much detergent used. washing kitchen towels together with underwear at low temperature is gross..........................

as for the tshirts --> i've been a M for the last 25 years and indeed love tight (everywhere ;-))
