Leaving Thailand for China, here is why

MrHammer

Thailand is the worst place for speaking English, I have ever visited.

Don't go to Japan. It is much worse in the English department and expensive as well - very safe and good food though.

Agree. Both Japan and Korea speak less English than the Thais. Yet, they're probably the two most advanced economies in Asia. Imagine that. This Maroon Watcher guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

Well OP, if you think that that's the best for you then you should go, but before let me tell you some things, firstly I lived in Beijing, studied there, worked there, had some chinese gf and ocassionally slept with many other chinese chicks, that met in clubs, the uni, etc, so listen:

1. The chinese are by far more nationalist and racist than the Thais, getting acepted into their society is by far much more difficult, and comunicating with them if you dodnt speak chinese is very difficult cuz is very difficult to find a chinese who speaks english( and that was in the capital, so think about the rest).

2. Chinese are far more rude and unclean that the Thais, and in china if you dont speak chinese is much more difficult than in here to get a gal.

3. The food is great, but you cant eat it in peace cuz you dont know if is clean or not.

4. The level of corruption is by far higher than in here.

5. The language is much more difficult to master than Thai( I am fluent in both Chinese and Thai).

6. If by norm Thai chicks are bad in bed, then the chinese are even worse( I am talking from my experience, for me the best mates in sex are latin women, but then me myself are latin too wink.png)

7. In china getting a job if you dont speak chinese in by far much more difficult, and getting a work permit even more difficult.

8. The levels of polution of all kinds are crazyyyyyyy(noise, air, water etc).

9. In the hospitals they will suck your money out of your wallets.

10. When you go to buy they will charge you at least three times the real price.

So bfore going to china read this and think about it. BTW , I love both countries and have many chinese and thai friends and becuz of job go to beijing almost on a monthly base, I post just to let you knnow.

***************************************************

Think he's had about a hundred or so reply posts stating about the same, including from me (was in PEK for 4.5 years), though yours added some spicey detail. If the cat is still set on going after all that, he's going.

Personally, I am considering returning for a consulting gig, but so far not enough compensation offered to get me by the air quality, much less the traffic, the rudeness, the lying, the overpriced crap, the dishonest landlords, the spitting, the taxi drivers with no sense of hygiene, the backstabbing, the cruel mistreatment of migrant workers, the stupid facile status BS, the snooty bitches and male counterparts who have no reason to be snooty (but deem themselves to be *upper class* and *superior people*), the screaming and slamming doors in hotel corridors, the disregard for pedestrians by drivers, the watered-down often bogus booze in the clubs, the two-faced A-holes everywhere, the insecure overcompensating Chinese males, the spoiled out-of-control kids about everywhere in the cities, the constant and pointless hitting of auto horns to the point you start losing it in some city corridors and resort towns -- the latter example recalling moronic taxi drivers who think they drive around hitting their horn every five seconds, along with the other drivers on either side of them hitting their horn every five seconds, that's gonna get them a fare...

But, yeah, I agree, some great chow there, cuisines from all over the nation -- in the cities.

"Even teachers need a Degree" or something TEFL?

Really!!

A TEFL is not a degree. You must have a degree in Thailand, Japan and China to teach English in a school or an adult language school these days. You also must have a work permit and it must be applied for in your country and have a job to go to.

Some people might be lucky and teach in private houses, but they would prefer young Western women.

We only have ourselves to blame if the Thais, don't like us farangs.

I see fat bellied old men walking around towns and shopping malls with no shirts on and farang women sunbathing topless on the beach.

Many Thais are shocked by this and regard it as disrespectful.

They also see us as perverts only coming for the sex and cheap booze, where'as massage and prostitution in Thailand is an accepted low key part of their culture and nothing to be ashamed of.

I have been to China 3 times for the same reasons you give.

The Girls there are beautiful, but materialistic and educated, they know what they want from a man and that usually means good financial support for her and her famiy if neccesary, so this means a good job and no beach bums.

The whole country wants what we have. flat screen TVs fridges, cars, branded fashion goods and food with Western names. Hip hop and expensive sophisticated nightclubs and disco's. And as far as I couid tell, that is all they are focused on.

Yes they are starting to love their nature and their old culture of art and music too.

But really you need a wad to be there.

They love to go around in groups and don't seem too keen on individualistic lifestyles.

The other thing is that you only get a one months visa. That's it! unless you are a teacher or have a job there. (Even English teachers need a degree in something )

In some places you will need a hefty non returnable security deposit to rent a place.

You will get hassled by the minute when you walk down the street on Beijing and Shanghai, by people trying to sell you something or con you.

On two occasions I went in spring and got very bad chest infections, I think due to the habit of men and women spitting up phlegm right in front of you and the extreme cold of spring ( March )

I rushed back to ill to Thailand and sat on a nice warm beach under a coconut tree with a plate of tropical fruit. Ahhhh!.

All the taxi drivers smell of garlicky fish source. God know what they eat, but it is putrifying and they don't stop using their horns.

But don't let me put you off haha!

Please keep us informed as to how you get on there.

Mr. Hammer, now it's perfectly clear you're making the wrong decision. Say it ain't so!

Take another look at Thailand--get out of BKK above all.

If you must go, consider the Phils, Vietnam, Cambodia, or Indonesia.

The bike has been sold, the lease has been ended and I will buy a ticket for Taiwan tomorrow and stay there for 3 months to learn mandarin. Who knows what will happen after that, we shall see. Taiwan seems very agreeable too. It would be foolish to not listen to experience from those who have been in China, but it would also be foolish to not try out things for yourself.

I used to be in the Army. I watched a new guy walk into a minefield. I yelled don't go there. He flipped me off and continued to walk. Boom. Sin Loy (sorry about that in Vietnamese)

MrHammer, you say, " Most foreign expats are trash, simply put. Alcoholics, sexual degenerates, criminals and perverts." Well sir after reading your rant with a deleted word in almost every sentence, I wonder where you fall into the above classifications. If you are as you say educated, surely you could write a rant without using so many deleted words. I am afraid that to me you come across as one of those people who always thinks they are better than anyone else thinks they are and thus doesn't fit in anywhere. Good luck to you in China, maybe it will be the place that appreciates your true worth.

Well your alcohol prices have gotten too high, and the vulnerable women you seem to gravitate to have other choices now making them harder for you attain. On to greener pastures......................

As for me. I live in the beautiful north of Thailand, I have wonderful Thai friends, business partners, and social relationships. I eat fresh healthy food for a fraction of the cost of most ANY other place on this planet. Housing is stunningly cheap, and the list of daily life positives is literally too long to list here.

I think you may be on the road of discovery whereby the meaning of the adage "Wherever you go, there you are." may at some point soon be dawning on you. Good luck in China!

I was hoping to find that lifestyle on my first trip to Thailand, and thought about Chaing Mai, and saw briefly the outlying areas up there.

The weather was much better than BKK and more people spoke english

what areas would you suggest?

I've posted several replies to the OP on this topic after my experience of living in China, mainly in Shanghai.

I have met so many people who rate Taiwan as a great place to live,in fact I have decided to go there for a 6 month " try out" from September.

It seems to be a much more civilized, organized and live able environment compared to mainland China.

Maybe the OP may consider Taiwan as a long term option, after a few months there.

My advice get there, join a "Hash"group, the best and fastest way to meet decent, helpful people,

Many things you say ring true but many just wont see it, however on a recent business class flight on Emirates Uk to Thailand there was the most obnoxious English man I have ever heard, drunk and swearing constantly, money doesnt make anyone a better person, I can just see the Porsche owner chucking his crap out of the window, they might have the money but still have NO CLASS whatsoever probably more of a "look at me" type.

Are you referring to the "look at me type" that has to let everyone know you are +200k a month and fly business class?

I would move to China too....but there are no Issan prostitutes there...love them all.....a new busload just arrived this morning...mmmmm

That's another plus for China

There are also many prostitutes in China if you know where to find them!

I visited Zuhai a few years ago, a city across Macau, there were so many prostitutes from the N and NE, some from Russia with blonde hair. Admittedly, some looked very good, and as always I refused the solicitation! Never told my wife about it!

A little caution to the OP. Years ago, my Canadian friend got his passport stamped with a big mark in Chinese: prostitute visitor. His passport got withheld pending some clearance. I still remember his face when we all boarded the casino boat in HK while he could just wave us off.

Also, some years ago, there were "prostitutes" available in the 4 and 5 star hotels that I stayed at. Lately, there's been a drive by the government to clamp down on this business. So, be watchful what you do when you stroll into a different territory!

Simply put, if you surround yourself with negatives, you will then become so.

There are cheerful, farang liking people where I live (Udon) who have positive life styles, and are upbeat. I do not find clubs that mainly cater to sexual activities as positive. In fact, I see the men who need this activity as being more the victims, as their conversations always steer towards their pathetic histories of losing money, homes and vehicles to ladies of the night. You just need a healthier, happier life style...and a better class of relationships.

Good plan. You'll meet your share of mainlanders there -- or see them, anyway... walking in groups and in busses, their little bright caps on, following the guide's flag, so they don't get lost.

If you decide to tour mainland, I very much more reccomend the South and Southwest. Hit a couple of cities then head inland. From Taiwan you are a hop to Xiamen. If you don't know it, nice little city on the coast, interesting harbour, a lot of upscale and Western-inclined stuff, not so crowded, Gulangyu Island makes for a great day hike.

Guess you know, too, Taiwan Mandarin differs from mainland, nominally.

I hate cities, most of all London. Nothing in that dump is comparable with where I came from in the UK or any other place around the world where I've lived. I couldn't think of anywhere worse in Thailand than choosing to live in the capital city. I can't blame the OP for wanting to leave, but Thailand isn't just Bangkok, just as London isn't England. Sure, if you need to be based there for work/business then it is understandable. Greed for money is an obsession in most capital cities and it is also a magnet for the dregs in society. Many go looking to earn their fortunes in the bright lights, but too many end up destitute and sleeping rough.

Dunno why the constant references about Isaan prostitutes, maybe got burned by a few, that were more clever than him?

When he matures, I think he will realise that the Chinese are just as self centered and cut-throat as the rest of the worlds' money grabbers. After all, the most unpleasant tight <deleted> I have come across in Thailand are in fact Thai Chinese.

For me? I love the Thai weather, the countryside, the diversity and the opportunity to live a comfortable no pressure life. I wouldn't go as far as saying I love the culture or the people, just an acknowledgement and acceptance that things are the way they are and it is up to me to deal with what comes my way.

If you've lived in a place for a while, which he has to be fair, and you only see the place going downhill then make a change, because you will never be able to do anything about it. After all, apart from the weather I left England because what started in London, spread like a cancer through the rest of my country, where I didn't recognise the place any more, so looked for a way out. Thank you Thailand, for letting me in and affording all you have to offer.

I don't recognize Thailand anymore because of the cancer that has spread here, and how it has changed the dynamic between the foreigners and Thais.

Don't get the issan prostitute thing....any farang area it's all there to witness...they give the issan area a bad name unfortunately, but it's what most foreigners first encounter when they get here..

Ridiculous the way people come on here and slag off their own countries.

I've never been to Taiwan, outside of the airport on layovers. I heard that years ago (more like decades), it was near paradise. But isn't it true that the more "civilized and organized" a society it is, the more expensive it is to live there? I don't think Taiwan is on the same level as, say, Hong Kong, in terms of cost of living. But I would imagine it's getting up there.

China Nightlife is 10 times as expensive. Yes, there are more job opportunites but for business owners there are other problems that you don't have in Thailand. Dealing with a quasi communist and totally xenophobic government is tougher than Thailand.

There aren't as many weird expats in China as Thailand but it seems that there will be one more once you arrive.

Unless you are making 20-40k RMB a month, I cannot see how it would be any more comfortable than Thailand on half that amount.

Good luck though.

Thailand is not the best place for a young breadhead. Why on earth go to nightclubs with prostitutes? nd they are surely not all from ISarn. My children are what you consider "weird looking halfbreeds" - I find that very insulting, racist and ignorant.

Yet another (probably Yank)who refuses to adapt to another culture and fails, leaving Thaialnd and criticizing her for his lackings. - good riddance.

Not sure why anyone would launch into a rant about prostitution in Thailand when China is no shrinking violet in servicing the carnal needs of its population.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_China#Prostitution_after_1978

- massive gender imbalance courtesy of the one-child policy

- entrenched corruption from the local cops to kleptocrats at the top tiers of the Communist Party

- paternalistic society which considers any woman who has had sex before marriage as untouchable

- a long history of trafficking in everything from endangered species to people

Guess which tiers the vast majority of sex workers in China occupy, particularly women trafficked from other parts of the world ....
