rubl
"they want broadcasts to demonstrate the large number of red shirts to the public." ianf
These UDD are the spiritual heirs of The Shining Path, Khmer Rouge, the Cultural Revolution, and Red Army Faktion/Baader Meinhof, all of whom have been discredited and are receding into the darkness of history whence they first emerged. Only in Thailand does it seem that these sinister forces still thrive. This is a country literally going back to the future. You forgot to say that Suthep's armed mob is the spiritual heir of the SA. Sent from my i-mobile IQ XA using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app Oh dear! Same nonsense again about Suthep. Take your blinkers off please. kkerry
Better not read the other newspaper or you will think they have gone in to photoshop overdrive... whatever, no-one in Thailand is any good at estimating crowds, it's just pluck some figure out of the air like six million and hope if you say it long enough someone will believe it. monkeycountry
I see it reported elsewhere that some of the (previous) PT MP's are said to be reluctant to 'fund' their supporters to go to the rally. Also said that each MP and senator who support PT are expected to take (and no doubt fund) 500 supporters to the rally. Notice that the source for your info is a PTP guy. "A key Pheu Thai Party figure in Isan, who spoke on condition of anonymity, conceded that support from people in the North and Northeast may be waning as Pheu Thai Party MPs have been reluctant to chip in financial support for the rally" A slightly embarrassing quote for those here on TV who support the UDD :-D

mikemac
Rehearsal,,eh? Jatuporn went from claiming 500,000 would attend, to 200,000 would attend, to now, just a rehearsal. Talk about lowering expectations. So, really all that need to attend are stage hands and invited speakers and it will be considered a successful 'rehearsal'. At the current rate of back peddaling by midday it's going to end up being a PowerPoint slide showing how a Red Shirt rally should look like. Would anyone in their ranks have the brains to present a Power Point display ?

Would anyone in their ranks have the brains to present a Power Point display ? If there was some sort of catastrophe that caused mass deaths at the mini rally, it would be the greatest ever mass Darwin award. Imagine, there were a few hundred people there protesting to allow rampant corruption to remain, and the installation of life long dictatorship and the poverty/hopelessness that comes with it. They should be ashamed of themselves. Edited April 6, 2014 by jaidam

Given this particular protest is planned to go for 3 days, has anyone seen/heard how many are still there this morning? The article I saw in BP about Red Shirt Rally Gets Off to Slow Start quoted "security officers" as saying there were only 35,000. Thida the Communist claimed that 300,000 showed up. I know which one I'll believe. https://twitter.com/RichardBarrow/status/452596583990046721/photo/1 Edited April 6, 2014 by zydeco

zydeco
the real photo If you knew anything about Utthayan Road, you would realize that the Reds are concentrated in a very small section of the road towards the Sai 4 end. They don't even extend to the first rise in the road. FYI, there are two rises on Utthayan, a large overpass and smaller rise towards the Sai 3 side. It looks like the Reds are situated on no more than about 5 percent of the road. They could have held this more effectively on Sai 5. At least they would have been near a Tesco Lotus that way. They flopped. Edited April 6, 2014 by zydeco

Dogmatix
From 1,000,000 to 500,000 to 60,000 to 40,000 to 30,000 to - cancelled rally ! But whatever the numbers, what the UDD actually do is what will count. Already, Jatuporn's words have crossed the line into criminality - as he says that the rally is intended to send a " message " to the Constitutional Court. That's intimidation of the court and that's illegal. So already the UDD rally has by that framing become unconstitutional. The PDRC want to strengthen the checks and balances. The UDD wants them to go away. Have they cancelled the rally? Jatuporn was telling them to prepare for a 15 day stint and then reduced it to only two days. Is it now cancelled completely? Dogmatix
For the Ayudhya rally Thaksin ordered each former PT MP to bring 2,000 reds at his own expense which is where the 500,000 number came from. However, that one was a flop in terms of numbers because each MP couldn't manage more than an average of around 200 reds. I assumed Thaksin might actually transfer some of his own money after that experience to try and make this one more of a success. But it doesn't seem like that happened or, if it did, the MPs must have just pocketed it. He is so notoriously mean that it is most likely that he is still leaning on the MPs to pay for everything. They are reluctant to spend their own money and the farmers are fed up with being threatened and intimidated by the MPs and rich reds who have lined their own pockets but cheated the farmers. So please share why the one million unpaid poor farmers who were protesting in Bangkok for their due rice payments have now disappeared home and gone totally quiet although they are still unpaid? What happened, what do you think happened? Or perhaps fab4 or the reincarnation of calgaryll (who is always on the spot at every event / every time and who knows the intimate exact details of every situation) could answer the question.
