Strictly For Show....................

Recommended Posts

Posted

Recently in my village a lot of new structures have been springing up. The structures I am describing are....... walls, boundary walls or at least appear to be so on first glance.

The walls however do not surround the whole property, just the front and half way down the sides.

Curiosity got the better of me and I had to ask the wife to explain why this was happening. She said, as the title of the thread states..........'for show.'

So, what we have here in my village is walls being partially built around homes for show only. There is no practical use for their construction. It doesn't protect the garden and home as you can walk down the side a little and then just walk in. It is unsettling to say the least to see a shack with no indoor plumbing, no windows, an outside toilet and a rusty tin roof spending their hard earned cash (or most likely borrowed) on something that just doesn't make sense. My wife's cousin spent 60,000 baht on her partial wall and she lives in what can only be described as a shed. I don't get it. Surely they must see that the money could be sent on more useful things like windows and plumbing.

Anyway the point to the post is, have any other TV'ers seen something that was built or purchased 'simply for show' in their neighbourhoods ? The crazier and most impractical the better. Foreigner or Thai. it doesn't matter. If you have pictures then even better. I will try to get a picture of my wife's cousin's house later and post it.

For the Thai apologists, this is not a Thai bashing post. I realise 'keeping up with the neighbours' is a western pastime but as this is a Thailand forum, I would like to see the Thai side of it. I hope this doesn't affect your real need to be Thai at all costs and jeopardise your infinite 'farrang Thainess.'

Looking forward to your observations and photo's if possible. Be careful out there. wai.gif

In my ex girlfriends village a favourite pastime was moving the boundary pegs on property to steal a few inches of land from your neighbour. That is how petty life in the village is. My girl put a fence down each side of the property (partial length) just to make an immovable marker of where the boundary is. I suspect the same is going on in your village...

Yes, this what I thought at first but most won't build if they have a neighbour at the side as they insist the neighbour pays for half the wall on that side. Surely putting concrete posts would be a cheaper alternative than building a proper plastered wall if just to mark a boundary.

Anyway this just an example of 'for show'. Do we have any other strange incidents of 'strictly for show' in their neighbourhood???

Not quite concrete walls. , but I love the way my Thai gf wants to big note with her friends. Two examples. First when I buy her something she posts it on Facebook to her girlfriends. She basically doubles the price I told her I paid for it.

Second , I go to HCM every month. Anyway I give her money when I leave. My formulae is 1000 baht a day. She telss her gfs that I give her "big money" when I leave.

All this is to make it appear she is being taken very good care off and is LUCKY.

I love their sweet little hearts. Its all about face as the farang say.

By the way I could give many more examples.

I don't see much of people build a fence for a show. I do know that people in the village would like to build a better house to live in, so some of them borrow the money from the bank to build a house. It is no different than the foreigners borrow money from the bank to buy a house. Some people buy a house that is too big and more than they can afford. Would that consider for a show?

I think it is silly, and what is the point of she doing that? It is like living a lie.

I think one of the biggest examples as Seastallion has mentioned is the purchase of cars where the buyer relies on a loan or a monthly installment that they can't afford.

I have seen this first hand, albeit a few years ago where a friend bought a camry, but when invited round to his home the inside was like a barren wasteland. In this case, it really was all about face. A pickup probably would have been a better buy for him.

The other one that springs to mind is smart phones or high-end tablets. The number of people I see walking about with I-phones, I-pads, galaxy notes, etc. that will be used only for Line, Facebook, watching low quality streamed videos or on the very rare occasion reading their g-mail, outlook or yahoo accounts.

Cheaper models (8 times cheaper in some cases) will do exactly the same job, but because they aren't high end brand names, they can't be seen to be had.

when i read posts like this i feel i'm living in a different country... my GF has a good job, lawyer, is not interested in competing with her friends and colleagues; is happy to have a samsung when all the others have iphones, only recently upgraded to 'fitfops' because i told her her lower quality shoes where potentially damaging her feet/legs, she goes to the gym and does yoga several times a week and doesn't ask or expect a penny from me. sure treat each other from time to time but that's it.

Yes! a guy in the next village over bought a very nice Nissan pickup and washes it all the time. Only problem is, he never takes it anywhere cause he has no money left for diesel.

But does anyone have any examples of foreigners buying or building something 'strictly for show' ????

Some photos would be great. Maybe a huge Buddah in their garden or a house shaped like a temple !

Anything that made you look and say, ' what the f@@k !'

Enough stories about blokes with lawyer gf etc and people saying the Thai are being silly to let's say exaggerate.

I'm talking about your average girl. A lot have very little.

And a lot tend to want to appear to be doing OK.

Give them a break. I put a light hearted post about some of the girls I know and we get the worms from woodwork trashing. Them.

Veblernese goods. May have spelt that incorrectly. Fact is refers to goods and services where price does not follow normal supply demand curve. They are purchased in the main for the fact they imply wealth.

Think you might see a lot more of this in the west. Your lawyer critter in her flip flops clearly doesn't buy this stuff

The problem with the concrete posts...the neighbour digs them out at night and moves them. next door to me have taken 2 mtrs on an angle through the wifes land.

There is no way she will ever get it back now, as a government official arrived, surveyed the land and moved his records to show the land belonged to next door.

Wonder how much next door slipped in his pocket to do?????.

Sorry, not possible. All relevant land owners surrounding someones land must be present when the land drawings are done. Any disagreements are addressed then. The marker is not put by the government employs until all agree.

Your wife would have had the opportunity to object. Looks like she chose not to.

The neighbours who bought a shiny new pickup (on finance presumably), but didn't want to pay the dealer for the 3,000km service. Instead they did it themselves, including an 'oil change'. When the engine promptly blew up, they were confused and angry that the dealer wouldn't honour the warranty.

If someone moves your post you have a legal right to something about it . You can get the goverment land office to come and measure your land according to your title .

Actually, I do understand what the OP is writing about.

The façade of Thai showmanship when it comes to BIG Face.

The bigger and showier the gate, the bigger the Thai smile.

As many posters have already pointed out ... 'tis but a veneer,

a flamingo without substance.

We've just had TWIN boys ... cuties actually (but every Dad would say that).

My partners Father is just itching till they can walk, and he can stroll into TESCO with a white boy in each hand

... and believe me ... they are very white ... BIG FACE for him ... almost better then a new car in the driveway ... laugh.png

.

You should of mentioned before, you have had twins.

Congratulations. ;)

Well there is much worse, but still...
