On the same day that the body of a medical student washed up on a riverbank in the capital, a young boy was also reported to have drowned while bathing in the Mekong River.

A body found yesterday morning on a riverbank near the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh was identified by police as Sroeun Chhun, a 21-year-old student at the University of Health and Sciences.

“We do not know why the man drowned,” said Lem Seriesophorn, Chey Chumneas commune police chief, who added that Chhun’s relatives took the body to Sansom Kosal Pagoda.

In a separate, unrelated case, the parents of an eight-year-old boy from Kandal province reported that their son drowned yesterday while bathing in the river with his sister, according to Mok Kampoul district police.

Chhay Davin was swimming when he slipped and disappeared into deeper water, the district police chief said. No body has yet been found.
