Can't buy THB with my card at exchange booths?!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I called Super Rich and Vasu to know if I could buy THB with my international Debit Card from Masterrcard. Apparently, both told me I can't do such a thing.

Is there any other exchange booth company allowing exchanges with International Mastercard Debit Card?

Thanks.

You didn't understand what they told you, or you weren't the one who asked?

Any of the high street banks, take your passport and withdraw over the counter.

Don't most people just use the ATM and forgo the passport requirement?

I believe the OP does not know there are a couple million Farang in Bangkok buying Thai Baht every day from ATM machines. Although I don't know how he figures any tourists get cash?

Thank you for your comments, guys. I forgot to mention (as I thought it's common sense) that my question aims to gather meaningful answers. But, if you must know, I need to withdraw multiple times a week. Hoping this precision would lead to positive comments.

You can withdraw 20 times a day or 50 as long as you don't exceed your credit limit. Tell your bank you are going to Thailand.

Clearly a problem of naivety !

The free standing, independent "money changers" are cash only businesses " They do not "do" cards!

I you wish to access cash with a card a bank (or ATM) is the only place that can be done !

Yes, I can. But that wasn't the question. By the way, who would want to withdraw 20 times and get charged THB150 per withdrawal?

Guys, if you don't know the answers to my questions, I don't force you to answer. Please keep the topic efficient and effective as some users may look for the same topic. Thanks

1. Yes you can. 2 But why would you want to as you get charged THB 150 per withdrawal.

Tell your bank you are going to Thailand or they will think your card is stolen.

What else do you want to know? And please don't take the pedantic approach about telling me to read post number such and so. Post numbers change.

If you know the answer to my previous question, I'd be glad to hearing from you.

Please find the following as my question: "Do you know if I'd be charged as MasterCard exchange rate or let's say Bangkok Bank Exchange rate?" (in case of over the counter cash withdraw).

Maybe the bank would'nt automatically think your card has been stolen, maybe it's a simple fact that Thailand is a hotspot of fraudulent use of bankcards which is why when going to Thailand, especially the first time of going that you inform the bank/ card supplier of your intentions of travel to Thailand and the dates.

The banks and card issuers are trying to protect their money from being obtained frauduently so like to know if a customer is actually in Thailand and who is using the card before they allow funds to be withdrawn from a card...

I on many occasions have had texts from my card issuers asking me to contact them and when contacting them have been asked to provide details of recent transactions and where I made them...

Why not just ask the bank and the card provider?

For sure they will both charge fees for 20+ withdrawals/ week !smile.png

Google, What "what exchange rate do ATMs in Thailand charge"

The exchange rates charged are listed on a board in all banks that exchange money.

I'm sorry, but the last comments lead me to think you don't know the answer, which is fine. I'wouldnt waste more energy, if I were you. I will obviously get the answers and report them to share with the community and be more knowledgeable.

For reference:

1. I don't pay foreign transaction fees

2. Rates vary from bank to bank and exchange booth companies

3. There is no ATM rates per se unless ATMs offer dynamic conversion.Rates are from Visa, MarterCard or other card providers.

4. I don't want to pay the thb150 ATM fee.

5. But, I still want to be able to get cash instantaneously.

If you use an ATM you will pay a fee, there is no avoiding it, I have never been charged a fee when doing a withdrawal over the counter, although your card issuer may charge a fee.

It is better to withdraw a larger amount once a week than several little ones each week, thats not cost effective.

You're trying to save 150 baht fee? biggrin.png Well why didn't you say so? You called Super Rich and Vasu trying to save 150 baht fee? I can tell you how I did it. I transferred 10 million baht to an account at Bangkok Bank and I use their bank to withdraw money.

stupid question: how do you use a debit card to exchange money? ive had tourists ask us at our hotel and we dont ahve an atm or card exchange station. only cash to change.

i can put cash on a debit card or or a 'fill up' card and then go to someplace to get baht instead of shekles/dollars?

no this isnt a joke, so dont need snide remarks, not everyone lives in super westernized cities. we dont have this here or at least not in my area, so i really dont know and am also looking for a better way to carry cash then actaully carrying cash. i know many tourists get irritated at us but have never even known about what they are talking about, so now my curiousity is up. (and yes i do work in a hotel that does deal with intnt'l conventions on a small scale and yes, sometimes tourists get annoyed at our provinciality).

and i definately dont see my bank calling me or asking about wierd transactions and never once have they ever mentioned to me that i should let them know when i am abroad.

Do you have a credit card machine in your hotel?

If you do, you process the 'withdrawl' as a normal card transaction. You then give the card holder the cash. ID verification is best advised in the event things go south and international bank fraud departments get involved.

If you have a computer based property management system, you'd enter it as a 'paid out' or similar - just so that the system balances out and the accounts department don't freak out because the system doesn't balance.

As CharlieH mentioned, you can probably do it at any of the major banks, good luck with explaining to them what you want to do though if your Thai isn't up to scratch. Otherwise take a friend who can help you out.

Is the debit card issued by MasterCard or by a foreign bank? If by MC then they'll set the rate.

If a foreign bank, you'll get the rate of the day (whatever that is) but then it will be up to the bank what you actually get charged once they've finished playing with your money on the Forex market i.e in a few days when it shows up on your statement (could be better, could be worse but definitely better than using DCC) and you're also likely to be charged a foreign currency conversion fee (around 3%) - the bank may also levy an 'over the counter' fee as well.

These requirements should have been in your first post, not dribbled out to us

Short answer, not that you will believe us, since it appears you like to post and then argue, is:

Most exchange booths that are not located at a bank will not handle credit card or ATM card cash advances. They make their money dealing in cash, not dealing with cards

So what do you think the guy really wants? It costs 35,000 baht round trip to fly from LAX and staying in BKK is not cheap so he really can't just be concerned about the 150 baht? Do you think we will get the real message soon?

Yeah I believe Optima (from SilverByte Group) is an Israeli owned company (given the information I have that 70% of hotels in Israel use this PMS). That being said, if you're credit card services are integrated into the PMS interface, it's a similar process for the transaction. But as you said (and as I suspected) the accounts department frowns upon this process.
